The Energy Behind Your Words Matters: Be Mindful It Doesn't Cost You Critical Connections

Here’s a lesson I’m reflecting on this morning: the energy you bring to your words matters as much as the words themselves.
Months ago, I sent a message to someone I deeply admire—a person whose work has inspired me in countless ways. We didn’t make the connection I had hoped for at the time, and as time passed, I went on about navigating the new chapter in my life which has been filled with highs and lows. I decided to follow up with a fourth message to end my year, as I normally do with many of the new connections I make.
But here’s where things went wrong: that fourth message wasn’t received as I had hoped. Looking back, I realize it wasn’t just about the words I used but the energy I brought to them. My emotions—uncertainty, hesitation, maybe even frustration about the next chapter/transition in my personal life—had found their way into the message, and that’s what was felt. Dang it, Monique!
The irony? I’ve developed a three-step methodology for cultivating meaningful connections and even wrote a book about it. But this moment humbled me, showing that while tools and frameworks help, they don’t override the emotional tone we bring to our interactions.
This experience reminded me of an important truth: people can sense the energy behind your communication, whether it’s positive or not. Even with the best intentions, if your vibe is off, it can affect how your words are received.
The takeaway? Be mindful of your energy before you press “send.” Pause, check in with yourself, and make sure your intention aligns with the way you’re feeling. Authentic, positive energy makes all the difference in building and maintaining meaningful connections.
Stay lifted, intentional and keep growing.
