In the United States, billions of dollars are annually allocated to defense. It's a testament to our commitment to protecting our nation and our interests abroad. However, as we scan the horizon of future threats, it becomes increasingly clear that our collective safety and prosperity is inextricably tied to the strength of our human capital, specifically in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It's here that an exciting initiative known as STEM City USA comes into focus.

STEM City USA, an innovative educational project sponsored by Lockheed Martin, offers an excellent model for cultivating the next generation of American scientists, engineers, and innovators. This program is not merely an investment in the youth of today, but a well-placed bet on the future of our nation.

STEM City USA's unique approach to learning emphasizes active student participation, and indeed, this initiative is produced by students for students. Career Day, a notable event under the STEM City umbrella, brings together enthusiastic young minds eager to explore the plethora of opportunities that STEM fields offer. This event not only showcases various careers but also nurtures students' inquisitive minds, bolstering their critical thinking and problem-solving skills - abilities that are of utmost importance in today's rapidly changing technological landscape.

Lockheed Martin, known for its prominence in the aerospace, defense, security, and advanced technologies sectors, is the proud sponsor of STEM City USA. By investing in these budding minds, Lockheed Martin is ensuring that they are fostering the development of the creative, talented workforce needed to uphold the company’s commitment to innovation and American leadership in technology and defense.

Yet, as impressive as Lockheed Martin's support is, the future of our nation cannot rest on the shoulders of one corporation alone. It is imperative that other companies - big and small - step up to the plate and invest in STEM education programs like STEM City USA. By doing so, they would not only be investing in the workforce of tomorrow but also helping to maintain our nation's competitive edge on the global stage.

Now, more than ever, there is an urgent need for greater investment in initiatives like STEM City USA. The challenges we face as a nation - from climate change to cybersecurity threats, from public health crises to the drive for more sustainable energy solutions - require an army of skilled STEM professionals ready to take them on.

The students participating in STEM City USA represent a reservoir of untapped potential. By investing in their education, we can unlock this potential and set our nation on a path to continued greatness. It's time for more corporations to recognize the value of investing in STEM education and follow Lockheed Martin's lead. By investing in our students today, we are investing in the strength and security of our nation tomorrow.

In a world that is becoming increasingly technologically sophisticated, STEM education is not a luxury—it is a necessity. Programs like STEM City USA are leading the way in this regard. They are planting seeds that will grow into the innovators, problem solvers, and leaders of tomorrow, ensuring that our country remains at the forefront of global innovation and progress.

While many corporations have begun to recognize the importance of investing in youth development, there are others that still have some catching up to do. Let's remember, it is these young minds that are poised to take over the helm of innovation and development in the near future. Our collective prosperity, defense, and progress are contingent on the capabilities and skills they acquire today.

I speak to all those companies that earn billions of dollars from defense contracts but have yet to invest significantly in initiatives that support the development of our youth. Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, L3Harris, and Leidos have already acknowledged this responsibility and have shown their commitment to nurturing our future generation. However, others must step up and join these industry leaders in this endeavor.

To those companies that are lagging, consider this a friendly challenge. In your hands, you hold the resources that could potentially change the trajectory of many young lives and, in the process, ensure a bright and secure future for our nation. By investing in STEM education and supporting initiatives like STEM City USA, you can play a crucial role in empowering our youth and shaping our future.

The stakes are high, but so are the rewards. Every dollar invested in nurturing our young minds will come back to us manifold - as innovation, as economic growth, as a more secure nation. Investing in our youth isn't merely an act of corporate social responsibility. It's a strategic move that strengthens your company, the defense industry, and our nation.

It's crucial to acknowledge the companies that lead the way and set the bar high when it comes to investing in our youth and future. Boston Scientific was the first to step up and support STEM City USA, making a significant investment of $200,000. This pioneering move not only demonstrates their commitment to STEM education but also sets a benchmark for other companies to meet and hopefully surpass.

Camille Chang Gilmore, Boston Scientific's Vice President of Human Resources and Global Chief Diversity Officer, and CEO Mike Mahoney were instrumental in answering the call for support. Their proactive decision showcases a forward-thinking leadership style and a deep understanding of the importance of early STEM exposure.

The commitment shown by Boston Scientific serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved when corporate resources are channeled towards empowering our youth. Their decision to invest early and significantly in STEM City USA is a testament to the power of corporate leadership and its potential to effect meaningful change. Our longtime supporter Raytheon also jumped in with $1,000,000.

Now, the question is - who will follow in their footsteps? Who will rise to the challenge set by Boston Scientific and further the cause of STEM education? Other companies, especially those benefitting from defense contracts, have a golden opportunity to step forward and make a significant difference. Let's not let this opportunity go by. Our youth, and indeed our future, depend on it.So, I call on you to rise to this challenge. Join the ranks of those companies that have already recognized the tremendous potential our youth hold. Be part of the movement that not only enriches your organization but also strengthens our nation's defenses by investing in the most potent weapon we have - the boundless potential of our young minds.
