Is this the end of the world as we know it?

Is this the end of the world as we know it?

I was watching the Republican presidential debate on NewsNation the other night, where Vivek Ramaswamy disparaged Nikki Haley (what’s new?). I loved Gov. Haley’s response: “It’s not worth my time to respond to you.”

?My friend, Chris Christie -- pugilistic by reputation but in reality, a sincere and well-meaning person – delightfully called out Ramaswamy for his boorish behavior, which got me to thinking. . .

This acerbic behavior is nothing new.

Queue to Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin last month challenging the head of the Teamsters to a fight, during a Senate committee hearing. And over the past several years, various congresspeople (you know who I mean) have enjoyed – and benefitted from -- just being unkind, angry human beings. The always-on talking heads news cycle and social media/bot amplification certainly don’t help.

?

Is this the end of humanity as we know it?

?

Nope. Not even close. What we’re seeing is just tough-guy syndrome drama. Intentionally made for video sharing. Great marketing, if that’s what’s appealing to your target audience, which, I believe, most of us do not comprise.

?

In the “real world” (aka outside the Beltway), I’m reminded every day by clients, colleagues, business partners and those in communities across the country that, overwhelmingly (and across generations), people are good, well-meaning, and mostly kind.

?

Does that mean we're all is “nice” 24/7? No, that’s not real. And for sure, there are jerks out there who, intentionally or not, can ruin your day.

?

How about when you say something, then a half second after it’s out of your mouth, you have an “Oh $#i%” moment and wish you could hit the undo button? It happens. But we admit it, apologize (“I’m sorry, that didn’t come out the way I intended. . . here’s what I’m trying to say…”), and move on.

?We’re ok, folks. Humanity, for the most part, is alive and well.

?What do you think? If you disagree, you’re a dip$#i%! (oops, that's not what I meant to say. . .)

Yes, most people are kind but the jerks keep getting rewarded so it encourages more of that behavior. I hope you are right, Ken Murray, that humanity will win now and this boorish behavior will not become the norm in the future.

I’d like to think that years from now, upon reflection, perspective will come. A hopeful post, thank you.
