“The end of the world” turned out to prove itself an important marine repair location
The cargo vessel MV Skagern suffered from a stern tube leakage and was forced to make an unplanned repair stop at Hirtshals Port, where Hirtshals Yard took the vessel into their floating dock.
MV Skagern sails mainly from Sweden to UK, so deviation from the sailing route was limited. MV Skagern is managed by the Dutch company MF Shipping Group, who manages approx 45 vessels.
This was the first time MF Shipping Group made a repair stop in Hirtshals. The superintendent onboard Mr. Geert Reuten was impressed by the repair facilities Hirtshals offers. He decided to extend the stop to have other repair services done now.
MarineShaft repaired the rudder stocks and parts from the rudder arrangement, type Becker. The rudder stock suffered from corrosion and wear. We also got the order for 2 new composite bushings. Hirtshals Yard handled the project, and MarineShaft received the order from them.
For the repair of the rudder link system, we used our laser cladding equipment. Superintendent Geert Reuten was able to see the laser cladding carried out in person, and he was impressed by this class-approved fast-welding technique. Geert was given a tour inside our 3 workshops in Hirtshals, and he said afterward.?“This stop in Hirtshals has become a real eye-opener to me and our company. We talked about this “pit stop” as going to the “End of the World”. Who would have imagined this location being so rich in professional marine service providers”?
