End of the Student Direct Stream and Nigeria Student Express

As of November 8, 2024, the Canadian government has announced a significant update to its visa policies aimed at ensuring fair and equal access for all international students applying for study permits.

Launched in 2018, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) provided expedited processing for eligible post-secondary students. Initially available to legal residents of Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam, the SDS facilitated a smoother application process. Similarly, Nigerian prospective university students benefited from a streamlined process through the Nigeria Student Express (NSE).

Canada's objective with these programs was to strengthen the integrity of the visa system, reduce student vulnerability, and ensure a fair application process and positive academic experience for all. However, as part of its continuous commitment to these goals, the Canadian government has decided to end the SDS and NSE initiatives effective immediately.

What This Means for Prospective Students

Apply Through Regular Streams: Prospective students are now invited to apply through the regular study permit stream, which continues to accept Guaranteed Investment Certificates as proof of financial support. Canada remains welcoming to international students from all corners of the globe.

Transition Period: Any eligible SDS and NSE applications received before 2:00 p.m. ET on November 8, 2024, will still be processed under these respective streams. Applications submitted after this time will be handled through the regular study permit stream.

Equal Opportunity: This change will not negatively impact the eligibility of students applying from countries that previously had access to SDS or NSE. All students must meet Canada’s established study permit requirements.

This policy shift reflects Canada's ongoing efforts to provide equitable opportunities for all international students while maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of its immigration system.
