The End of Daylight Saving Time in Mexico

In Mexico, after 26 years of applying the change in the summertime, at the end of October 2022, an initiative of the current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) was approved in the Senate that repeals this change. It would only be kept in the northern border area, to not stop economic activity between the US and Mexico in that area. For this reason, starting this year, we (Mexicans) should not move our clocks on the first Sunday of April. This also applies to all computers, smartphones, and technology that applied it automatically.

But what happened on Sunday, April 2 with all this "smart" technology?

April 2, 2023

That early morning of April 2, I was awake as my son and I like to watch Formula 1 races live. Due to the time difference with Australia, the race ended shortly before 2 am. When I was already in bed to sleep, I checked my smartphone for the last time and noticed that it said 3:10 am, when only a few minutes had passed since the race had finished. The good thing for me is that I had nothing special scheduled on the agenda for that Sunday, so I just turned off my phone and fall asleep.

In the morning when I woke up, I rechecked my smartphone and it had indeed changed the schedule, without considering that it should not be done. Checking other equipment, like my laptop, everything was normal. Because of this, I tried to remove the option to use daylight saving time on my mobile phone but it could not be done, so I had to change it to a city where it reflected my real-time.

That Sunday night, I also saw that the equipment provided by my Internet, Telephone, and Cable TV provider had the same problem with the TV programming. Through the news, I found out that not only my phone had this problem but that many people were in the same situation as me. There were even people who arrived an hour earlier at the airport since they did not know what time it was.

I've never understood daylight saving Manuel Barragan. Such trouble for the rest of the world. But I didn't know it happens in Mexico too! Interesting read.
