The end of CD sales.
Was 2018 really the end of physical music sales?
So it seems because after Best Buy has decided to stop shipping CDs in its stores starting July 1st, Target stores could also take the same "path" in the near future, according to Billboard.
This same company that hitherto had taken the inventory risk, by agreeing to pay for any goods shipped within 60 days and to reship unsold CDs for credit, asked the suppliers to be sold on a delivery basis, thus shifting the inventory risk to labels.
In addition, Target gave the ultimatum to music and video providers that they want to switch to scan-based trading, targeting February 1. Although there seems to be an option to postpone the deadline to a couple of months.
The end of the CD format could be further accelerated if the major music producers do not decide what to do and accept the new conditions of sale.
