Encouraging Entrepreneurship

Encouraging Entrepreneurship

Yesterday I had the opportunity to be a judge for TiE Atlanta 's TiE University College Entrepreneurship program. The program allows college students with with a business venture tell their story as part of a pitch competition. The program is designed to help them improve their venture - by pairing them with local mentors and a structured program to teach the core concepts of building a business. Yesterday's session was the mock competition - where, as judges, our focus was on feedback, rather than deciding final scores.

I, and three other judges, got to hear 7 of around 30 teams as they pitched their idea. The ideas covered the gamut, from traditional "brick and mortar" businesses to cutting edge technologies across multiple industries. Innovation and energy ruled the day.

If you're considering a startup yourself, programs such as these can help you figure out what story to tell, how to tell it, and even where to tell it. The journey can be difficult, but the rewards can be great - even if not financially - but in figuring out how you want to impact the world. But, it's not a journey to take alone. There's a lot of traps for those who might not have been in business themselves before. Having access to experts and mentors can make the difference between a squashed idea to a smashing success.

What are some other ways you've seen entrepreneurship encouraged? What are some organizations you're involved with that are great at helping? Are you a founder yourself? Or an investor? Or a mentor?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
