Encouraging Customers to Buy

When first-time customers come into your tasting room, you want to do everything that you can do to make them feel that they have made a good choice.

Be warm and welcoming:

Some people, especially those who don’t know much about wine, could be uncomfortable with their lack of knowledge. For example:

  • Ask them first about their familiarity with wine.

Do they drink wine regularly at home?

If so, what types of wine do they prefer?

If they have a favorite wine, what is it?

Do they enjoy a glass of wine before dinner?

Once you have got the basics of the wines they like and the wines they prefer to drink, you can spend a little time describing your wines. Tailor your wine language to their familiarity with wine. You do not want to make your customers uncomfortable by using wine words that they may not be familiar with.

If the customers you are conversing with have a knowledge of wine, ask them for their favorite varietals. Do they prefer:

  • Red or white wines?
  • Sweet wines??
  • Big, bold reds or gentle whites?

Or, if they were stranded on a desert island, what three varietals of wine would they like to have with them?

Try not to overwhelm your customers with questions, though do ask them a few questions that will help you ascertain the familiarity and enjoyment of wine.

If your customers are not regular wine drinkers, give them some information on words they could use when talking about wine with friends. Or if there are some wines of yours that they particularly like, give them some information on the type of wine. A couple of things that they can remember when passing along the description of the wine to friends.

A tip of the glass from me to you!
