The Encouraged Injustice Weed Puller

The Encouraged Injustice Weed Puller

Many are asking, “Is there anything to be encouraged about in the midst of this crisis of Injustice?”

I submit absolutely yes!

In this 400 year war to cure the heart of our nation of the sin of racial injustice, and complicit indifference, we have entered into a pivotal time, a tipping point, and a strategic season of opportunity and break-through. This time is different.

Too many Americans, and especially to many Christ-followers, just like the 3 accompanying officers at George Floyd’s inhumane assassination, are guilty of aiding and abetting the crimes of our nation. We have asserted our contentious objection to being drafted into the war for justice. We have given consent to the crimes via our silence and even at times blamed the victims and defended the perpetrators. You needn’t be a racist to have this blood on your hands.

Yet, finally, the heart of America and the Church have been pierced to confess, repent, stand up for righteousness. Thousands of Americans if not millions of all colors, ethnicities, and ilks have stood up to say “this is enough!” local and state governments, educational institutions, corporations, and churches have emphatically asserted, “this is wrong, this is awful, this has gone on too long, we haven’t done our part and we are committed now to sow our, time, talent and treasure, to correct the wrongs, and join in this fight. American and the world have enlisted. Even our Federal legislators have already put forth the first salvo of police reforms. These things give me great encouragement and stoke my hope. This time is different!

So what does this have to do with pulling weeds?

When you wack weeds, you get their attention, but you don’t eliminate them. To extricate weeds you must grab them as close as possible to the root and pull with constant deliberate pressure. If you break them off and leave the root they will surely come back. Then you double-tap ‘em by spraying the area with herbicide to better ensure that nothing unwanted can grow there again.

So while we have cause to be encouraged and hopeful, we must not relent. We must continue with constant deliberate pressure to eliminate the sin of injustice from the heart of our nation and its people. I pray that when we have done all we can to pull out all the weeds at the root, there will be some form of “injustice-cide” that we can spray to ensure it never grows back. Maybe, if there were a fast-growing contagion of pure and contrite hearts, we would see injustice eradicated, and our nation healed. Nevertheless, it is still more evident than ever that men cannot change hearts. Only the God of All Power can change hearts. So we must pray in this manner while we continue to pull together with unrelenting and deliberate pressure to heal our nation of this sin. Then He can triple-tap it!

Going through the motions doesn’t please you, a flawless performance is nothing to you. I learned God-worship when my pride was shattered. Heart-shattered lives ready for love don’t for a moment escape God’s notice. Psalm 51:17 The Message (MSG)

  • Be encouraged and hopeful;
  • Pray without ceasing.
  • Do the work of fighting injustice as unto the Lord.

Indeed. We are commanded to love God and love others. Simple, not easy. But it is the most important commandment. This is an a excellent article and comparing it to weeds—right on, brother??

Well said Rod. Those roots are so deep in some areas (e.g. current policing procedures, education inequities, lack of equitable health care...), that we literally have to break up the existing soil and start over via planting totally new institutions. Just "Reform" with more training, etc. is not going to be sufficient.
