To Encourage Start-up Collaboration in EV Battery Recycling: “EU and India Forge Partnership”

The European Union (EU) and India have announced a cooperative initiative aimed at developing start-up partnerships in this crucial environmental and technological arena. This is a calculated step to support the recycling of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The partnership is governed by the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC), which was founded on April 25, 2022, in New Delhi, emphasizing the two countries' shared commitment to technological innovation and sustainable development.

By releasing an Expression of Interest (EoI) for startups working on electric vehicle battery recycling solutions, cooperation was formally established. To advance circular economy practices and meet carbon neutrality targets, this program aims to strengthen collaboration between small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) and startups from both regions. This will be accomplished through the promotion of information and experience sharing.

The centerpiece of this program will be a matchmaking event that is scheduled for June 2024. It will give selected innovators from the EU and India a stage on which to present their solutions. Twelve startups, six from each region, will be selected to pitch their technologies. Six finalists will also have the chance to visit the regions of their counterparts, allowing for face-to-face communication and possible joint ventures.

In addition to identifying and assisting startups and SMEs at the vanguard of battery recycling technology, the project aims to develop customer relationships, explore new trade routes, and find funding options for these forward-thinking businesses.

“Our goal is to coordinate our efforts with those of EU inventors to collaboratively create battery recycling solutions that stimulate industry growth. Our goal is to create a cooperative atmosphere where innovation and sustainability serve as the cornerstones of a thriving circular economy," stated Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, the Indian government's principal scientific adviser.

An essential step towards international cooperation in the crucial area of EV battery recycling has been taken with the invitation extended to startups and SMEs from the EU and India to submit their Expressions of Interest by April 30, 2024.
