Enabling Champion Teachers Through Continuous PD

Enabling Champion Teachers Through Continuous PD

Hello Education Leaders!

In this 9th edition of Teachinally, I am focusing on something super important yet often overlooked: ongoing training for our teachers.

Why Keep Training Teachers?

Teachers do more than just teach; they prepare students for the future. To do this well, they need to keep learning and growing.

Here’s why this ongoing training is a must:

  • Beyond Just Workshops: Quick, one-time workshops are great for motivation but don't always lead to lasting change. Regular training, however, means teachers get to practice and improve their skills over time.
  • Growth in Careers: Continuous training is key for teachers to grow in their careers. It keeps them up-to-date with new teaching methods, tech, and ideas about teaching.
  • Changing with the Times: Tech and student needs are always changing. Teachers need training programs that change too, so they're always ahead of the curve.
  • Curb the Attrition: Surveys reveal that teachers leave institutions because they don’t feel any progression in skill development.

Investing in Training

  • Part of the Budget: Good schools see training as part of their spending plan. It shows they value their teachers’ growth as much as their students'.
  • Measuring Success: We need clear ways to see if training works. This could be looking at how teachers perform, how engaged students are, and how new teaching tools are used.

  • Benefits: When done right, training leads to better teaching, more learning, and a stronger school overall.

Leaders, It’s Your Turn

You're not just running schools; you're leading the way in education. Investing in ongoing training isn't just about giving teachers new skills. It's about shaping a whole generation.

Next Steps:

  • Plan: Think about adding ongoing training to your yearly budget. What do your teachers need to learn next?
  • Work Together: Find training providers who think outside the box. Look for programs that fit what your school needs.
  • Keep Improving: Use feedback from teachers to make training even better.

PD Program Metric Quadrant

To systematically assess and improve your PD programs, I propose the following Metric Quadrant:

Regular assessment using these metrics will ensure that PD programs remain relevant, impactful, and aligned with your goal of fostering future-ready educators.

This quadrant provides a structured framework for regularly assessing and enhancing the effectiveness of PD programs. By analyzing each quadrant, educational leaders can pinpoint specific areas for improvement and tailor PD initiatives to maximize both educator engagement and classroom impact.
