EMRs and Diabetes in India – Enhancing Management and Insights

India is currently home to an estimated 100 million diabetics*, making it one of the countries most affected by this chronic condition. With the escalating prevalence of diabetes, leveraging technology, particularly Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), becomes imperative to understand the multifaceted nature of this public health challenge comprehensively. EMRs have emerged as a powerful tool in battling diabetes, offering personalized patient care while also providing insights into the broader epidemiological landscape.

Through means of instant access to various crucial patient information like blood glucose levels, medication history, lifestyle factors, and more, HealthPlix EMR serves as a capable tool for optimizing diabetes management. According to the EMR platform, from Jan 2023 to Oct 2023 a whooping number of 40 lakh (approx.)** visits were reported for diabetes with the number of patients recorded to be ~16.2 lakhs**. The data illustrated that, ~14,000 patients** presented with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), with the majority of patients between 10 to 30 years of age.

On the other hand, EMR data projected with remaining ~16.1 lakh** patients reported with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). An interesting observation made was that females were more affected between 50 and 60 years and vice versa for the age group of 61 to 70 years.

Yet another interesting insight observed on the HealthPlix EMR platform for diabetes pertains to the micro and macrovascular complications like diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic nephropathy, cardiovascular diseases, peripheral vascular diseases, etc. were noted in patient journey. This data from the EMR might aid the physicians in the timely intervention and to halt the progression of these complications, and might also enable in identifying the risk factors and patterns that contribute to its development. According to the EMR data, it was also observed the combination of biguanides and sulfonyl urea was the most prescribed drug molecule for T2DM.

In the context of World Diabetes Day (Nov. 14), it is crucial to recognize the significance of integrating EMRs into health care systems.? The invaluable insights provided by the EMR, through Real-world Evidence (RWE) analysis on the epidemiology, demographics, and the longitudinal tracking of the patient’s health journey, might support the development of tailored interventions that contribute to the broader efforts aimed at improving the outcomes for individuals living with diabetes.

One of the interesting and challenging areas of managing Diabetes is the increasing incidence of comorbidities. Dementia is one comorbidity that has a detrimental effect in management of diabetes. People with Dementia and Type 1 diabetes usually are unable to differentiate the initial aura or hypo and hyper glycaemia and this can lead to more confusion, behaviours that challenge and a huge risk of complications or even death. With persons with Type 2 diabetes, it can lead to people forgetting to take their medication, or forgetting to eat leading to fainting, passing out due to hypoglycaemia. In both instances, the person needs a proper routine, and someone to facilitate support and maintaining their level of independence, Dignity and respect. The family carer or care assistant should have the necessary dementia training and the understanding of working with routines, following specific tasks, and engaging with thr client based on their care plan and risk assessment. Let's work towards maintaining a good quality of life. Learn more about dementia. Message me.
