Empty the Monkey Mind

Empty the Monkey Mind

Early in 2022, Albert Nguyen, LCSW, PPSC , a therapist with more than a decade of experience, decided to take on a new project - writing a children’s book with elements of cultural representation and a lesson in mental health. Drawing upon his own childhood recollections of reading Dr. Seuss's stories, as well as the formidable anxiety levels he was seeing among his young patients in the wake of the pandemic, Albert felt compelled to create something meaningful that would make a difference.

Monkey Mind is an enchanting, uplifting story that follows young Bai who learns how to find balance and emotional control. The book introduces the concept of a "monkey mind," drawing from Eastern philosophies to explain the unsettled, chaotic thoughts that jump rapidly from one subject to another.? By using simple mindfulness-based strategies like pausing, slowing down, and taking deep breaths, Bai is able to gain clarity and focus his mind. The narrative also provides an opportunity for adults to openly discuss mental health with children, normalizing #anxiety and teaching them how to regulate their emotions.

In his quest to write this book, Albert sought the help of his brother Quin N. , an artist, who brings Bai's story to life with his beautiful illustrations. By using their respective strengths and resources, this project drew the brothers closer together as they joined to leverage their passions and talents.

Based on his professional counseling experience, Albert understands that the biggest indicator of success in therapy is the connection between therapist and patient. Bearing this in mind, much of his therapeutic work consists of finding methods to link with his patients on emotional, psychological, and spiritual levels. It made sense for him to also approach writing Monkey Mind in this way - as a conduit to help children understand and address their anxiety. His goal is twofold: to inspire parents to discuss anxiety with their kids, and to normalize and break the stigma of anxiety for children.

The two brothers embarked on a journey that has become one of their proudest accomplishments. Ultimately, Albert's therapeutic skills, Quin's artistic talent, and the duo’s ambition have brought to life this inspiring tale of understanding emotions and helping children learn how to manage their anxieties.?

After almost a year in production, we proudly present to you, Monkey Mind, our labor of love and dedication.? We hope it will bring joy, comfort, and understanding to all its readers!
