The Illusion of Empowerment
In today’s world, the concept of empowerment is often celebrated. On the surface, it appears that women have the same opportunities as men, with policies like equal pay, parental leave, and leadership programs supposedly leveling the playing field.
But the reality for many women is far more complex. Beneath this veneer of progress lies the Empowerment Paradox - a situation where women are expected to be empowered while still operating within systems that inherently disempower them.
This paradox isn’t always recognised, even by those it affects. Many men, and some women, believe that the barriers to success have been removed. They see the outward signs of progress and assume that any lack of success is due to personal failings rather than systemic issues.
This belief perpetuates a cycle of blame and self-doubt, where women are left questioning their own abilities rather than recognising the structural obstacles in their way.
The Empowerment Paradox: A Deeper Look
The Empowerment Paradox that I write about in Women Rising can be seen in many facets of the workplace, as well as in society more broadly. At work, although there are policies and programs in place designed to support women, these often exist within systems that continue to favour traditional, male-dominated norms.
Women are told to be empowered, to take charge, and to seize opportunities, yet they are often met with subtle and overt barriers that undermine their efforts.
For example, workplace cultures that prioritise assertiveness and competitiveness can disadvantage women who may lead with different styles.
Gender biases and stereotypes continue to influence hiring and promotion decisions, often in ways that are difficult to see but deeply felt.
The expectation for women to conform to certain gender norms - such as being nurturing and likable - can undermine their authority and hinder their career advancement.
The result is an environment where women feel pressured to empower themselves but are simultaneously disempowered by the very structures they are trying to succeed within. This creates a dissonance where women may achieve positions of power, yet still feel constrained and unsupported in their roles.
The Success Paradox: Redefining What It Means to Succeed
Closely tied to the Empowerment Paradox is the Success Paradox. Women are often encouraged to pursue success in ways that align with societal expectations - high-powered careers, leadership roles, and material wealth. However, these external markers of success can feel hollow or disconnected from what truly brings fulfillment.
Take the stories of Lisa and Rebecca, two women who dared to redefine success on their own terms. Lisa left her management role in finance to start a social enterprise focused on making a social impact. Rebecca, a tenured professor, chose to take a sabbatical to write a novel, pursuing a lifelong passion.

Both women found personal fulfillment in their choices, but they also faced scepticism and judgment from peers who viewed their decisions as steps down from traditional success.
The Success Paradox forces women to navigate the tension between external expectations and internal aspirations. It challenges them to reconcile their true desires with the societal pressure to conform to predefined success templates.
For many women, this paradox creates an ongoing inner conflict, leading to self-doubt and the constant questioning of whether they are on the “right” path.
