Empowerment strategies: Saying no to perfectionism

It's crucial to recognize that when you find yourself in a situation where your personal growth and balance are not being respected, there are alternative paths to explore. Sometimes, the best course of action is to extricate yourself from the current circumstances, while other times, it involves empowering yourself to engage in negotiation and learning.

You have the agency to decline certain commitments and even experiment with setting boundaries. Consider where you can introduce more ease and equilibrium into your life. Occasionally, this may require letting go of the pursuit of perfectionism. For instance, a physician who has taken on numerous responsibilities beyond patient care may need to practice the art of saying no.

The struggles of physicians in a post-pandemic world

Emerging from the COVID pandemic, the healthcare system faced unprecedented strain. Physicians, often working over 80 hours a week, navigated extremely challenging conditions. Financial uncertainties peaked, with many doctors unsure if they could even manage payroll, as patient visits drastically declined.

This period marked a critical juncture in healthcare, compelling providers to reconsider their future approaches to care. Alarmingly, during this phase, about 30,000 primary care physicians left the profession, an occurrence without precedent. The current system lacks the capacity to replenish this loss of medical professionals. Concurrently, we are facing a demographic shift: the senior population in the United States is projected to increase by 50% from 2020 to 2040. This aging demographic, presenting more complex health needs, underscores an impending crisis in patient care if revolutionary changes are not implemented.

Children as unwitting participants: the urgent need for oversight in tech

Our children have unwittingly been made part of a decades-long experiment involving social media and technology use. This ongoing experiment, conducted without adequate oversight, poses significant risks to their mental health and well-being. The lack of transparency from technology companies, coupled with limited access to relevant data, has hindered our understanding of the full extent of these impacts. It's crucial that we no longer allow this experiment to continue unchecked. Immediate intervention and oversight are imperative to safeguard the health of our children and the public at large. The well-being of our nation depends on it.

72-year-old doctor's heroic 24/7 duty during COVID-19 pandemic

I know a few doctors, and there's one story in particular that really stands out. When COVID hit in March 2020, several specialists at our hospital left. But there was this one doctor, 72 years old, who chose to stay. He was just amazing – he took on call duty non-stop, 24/7, for five straight months, at a time when other specialists in his field were stepping back because of the pandemic.

I had a chat with him about it, asking why he pushed himself so hard. His response? He simply said he did what he thought anyone would do in his place. He didn't see his actions as anything extraordinary, which is just incredible, right?

Robert Raschke is a critical care physician.

The dark side of doctor-patient interactions: medical gaslighting

Medical gaslighting is a distressing phenomenon wherein patients seeking medical care encounter an unsettling scenario. In these instances, individuals turn to healthcare professionals for help with their health concerns, only to experience dismissal or disbelief. The term "gaslighting" originates from the psychological manipulation tactic where an individual's reality is undermined, causing them to doubt their perceptions and judgment. In the context of healthcare, medical gaslighting occurs when doctors or medical practitioners downplay a patient's symptoms, offer vague explanations, or dismiss their concerns altogether. This can leave patients feeling invalidated, anxious, and more uncertain about their health than before seeking help.

Tami Burdick is a patient advocate and author of Diagnosis Detective: Curing Granulomatous Mastitis.

How physicians can thrive in and out of the clinic

Engaging in activities that resonate with your passions and values, such as quality time with family, outdoor adventures, or building a business, can profoundly enrich your personal and professional life. This holistic approach to living not only enhances your well-being but also elevates your capabilities as a physician. A singular focus on one aspect of life, particularly work, often leads to burnout, a phenomenon increasingly evident in the wake of the pandemic. The deterioration in many physicians' mental health and job satisfaction points to a lack of self-care, neglect in personal health, strained relationships, and a diminished sense of curiosity. Therefore, it's essential to understand that nurturing yourself is not just beneficial but imperative for being an effective and empathetic physician.
