Intro

What if we told you that you spend most of your time negotiating? Would that surprise you?

Well, whether you believe it or not, we were all born to negotiate, it's part of our essence. Life without negotiation would be meaningless.

We start negotiating from the earliest age.

Initially, these are basic things in our lives as babies and children, but as we grow into adulthood, we start to negotiate various issues that concern practically everything around us.

Do you remember when you were a child and you wanted something? How did you go about getting what you wanted?

We are sure you're laughing right now as you remember what happened. Did you get what you wanted?

We?want to announce that YOU were already a Negotiator in training!

Motivation

What’s important when it comes to negotiating?

Ladies, you may be asking yourselves, “But what is negotiating anyway?”

If you Google it, you'll find that there are several definitions. In particular, the one we like best is as follows:

‘Negotiation is a situation in which each point requiring agreement is dealt with in such a way as to seek to satisfy the needs of both parties, who hope to improve the situation in which they previously found themselves’.

We like this definition because it starts from a very important premise: a negotiation is only good when it's good for all sides.

Many people, when negotiating, try to impose a win-lose relationship with their client, in other words, a relationship where one side ends up winning and the other side loses.

So always remember:

When negotiating, always try to establish a win-win relationship with your client. That way, both sides will be satisfied and you'll avoid future problems.

Tips

Few important tips that can help you take the step towards starting a negotiation:

Negotiate more than just the price: Understand that negotiations are about more than just financial compensation. Should be included in the negotiation: payment methods, delivery times, referrals, advantages and other rewards.

Bear in mind that the price is only the tip of the iceberg during a negotiation.

Listen: Customers want to feel that their opinion is valuable and has been taken into account. To be a good negotiator, you must be an exceptional listener.

Listening is a key component in reaching an agreement during negotiation.

Work to resolve the problem: Work with the other party to find a solution to all areas of the disagreement.

Often, it's not just a discount that your interlocutor is looking for, but just attention and understanding.

When all parties try to work so that the other party can gain something, everything flows differently, as people leave feeling that they have gained something.

By realising that you are making a real effort, the customer can understand the situation and be more flexible about the deadline.

Breaking News

Women now hold over one third of all leadership roles in FTSE 350 companies

If you still think that negotiation isn't a subject for women, then we invite you to read the article about women leaders in the UK (March 2024).

The Review is the successor of the Hampton-Alexander Review and the Davies Review, all aimed at increasing focus on gender diversity at board and senior leadership level by Government, companies, and investors.

The Review focuses on the FTSE 350 but over the past two years it has also looked beyond the largest listed companies to examine diversity in leadership at 50 of the largest private companies and partnerships in the UK.

The 2024 Review, indicates that women now hold over one third of all leadership roles in FTSE 350 companies and includes the following key findings:

  • FTSE 350 companies met the target of women holding on average 40% of board positions last year, three years earlier than the target of December 2025. Women now hold 42.1% of board roles, with some companies targeting gender parity. There are no all-male boards remaining in the FTSE 350.
  • This means the UK is second globally in terms of percentage of women on boards, behind only France at 44.7% which operates a quota system rather than the voluntary system in the UK.
  • In respect of the four senior board roles, being Chair, Senior Independent Director (SID), CEO and CFO, there has been continued progress in representation in the role of the SID where women now hold 47% of positions in the FTSE 350. Women hold one in six Chair roles.
  • However, the number of women in executive director roles is lagging this, with only 15% across the FTSE 350. Churn in CEO positions has led to no change in the number of women in this role over the past year, at 21.
