Empowering Youth Volunteerism

Have you ever wondered who are these youths in the Istana with our red Youth Corps Singapore shirts? Meet the Youth Corps Singapore Istana Ambassadors, a dedicated group of young volunteers who have been extended the privilege of serving at the Istana. Our journey as the Youth Corps Istana Ambassadors began in 2018 when President Halimah Yacob became our Patron of Youth Corps Singapore, championing youth volunteerism.

Through events like Picnic@Istana and the Istana Open House, we engaged with our beneficiaries and community partners and elevate their Istana experience. A particularly memorable event was during the Lunar New Year engagement with seniors from Lions Befrienders. The seniors enjoyed the Lo Hei and origami-making session with Mdm President, and all of us were given a curated tour of the Inclusive Garden and the Main Building. Such opportunities allowed us to forge meaningful connections, leaving a lasting impact on both us volunteers and those we enjoyed serving. Beyond volunteering, our journey as the Youth Corps Istana Ambassadors also empowered us to continue contributing to our community and inspire our peers to do the same.

Giving back to the community represents many values that we hold close to our hearts. For some, volunteerism is a vessel for championing rights and opportunities for vulnerable communities. For others, volunteerism provides a platform for growth and humbling experiences to learn beyond your comfort zone. Giving back can also be rooted in the joy received by the people you serve. At its crux, serving the community allows us to connect with our neighbours, the larger community, and our collective ideas. It shapes the values we believe in, and it shapes a society that is caring and compassionate.

President’s steadfast support for youth leadership and volunteerism has further encouraged our youths to be active contributors to society and become compassionate leaders. As such, we are always grateful to be extended the privilege to serve at the Istana and to be pivotal in creating meaningful experiences for the people we do.

This National Day, we hope that youths out there can seek joy beyond their comfort zone, search for what drives them to help others and give back to those in need.
