Empowering Your Team the Right Way

Unleash Their Potential

(c) Patrick Flesner, 2024

Welcome to another edition of the "Leadership Shots" newsletter. In previous editions, we explored the power of accountability and the significance of empowerment in driving individual and team performance. Today, we'll dive deeper into the "how" of empowerment, uncovering ten key steps that will allow you to empower your teams effectively and unlock their full potential.

Step 1: Providing Tools & Resources

As I’ve stressed in the last newsletter edition, empowerment is not only about providing team members with the tools and resources they need to succeed. But this is certainly a critical part of it. You can only hold your team member accountable for the results they achieve if you empower them by providing them with what they need to succeed.?

Step 2: Building a Strong Foundation of Trust

Empowerment means more than just providing tools and resources. It involves providing individuals with the autonomy and confidence to make choices, take ownership, and make important decisions themselves. Some leaders I work with feel uncomfortable providing their team members with this kind of authority. But they don’t have to if they have hired strong team members, created a culture of accountability, and built trusting relationships with their team members. If your team members know that they can trust you and have your unwavering support, they will take ownership and take risks. And if you trust your team members, you know that they will take only reasonable risks and involve you in major decisions. Here the link to the newsletter about the power of trust and psychological safety.

Step 3: Defining Roles and Responsibilities Clearly

Clearly defined roles and responsibilities are crucial for effective empowerment. Team members must know what they are responsible for in terms of both tasks and deliverables. This clarity prevents confusion and empowers individuals to take ownership of the results they achieve (accountability).

Step 4: Communicating Clearly and Transparently

Transparent communication is essential for effective empowerment. Keep your team well-informed about the team's and organization's goals, strategies, and plans. You can only empower your team members to make informed decisions when everyone is on the same page.

Step 5: Encouraging Initiative and Decision-Making

Empowerment thrives when team members are encouraged to take initiative and make decisions. Don't micromanage. Inspire your team to propose solutions, tackle challenges, and make informed choices. When they feel their ideas are valued, they're more likely to innovate and excel.

Step 6: Embracing a Culture of Learning

A culture of continuous learning is vital for empowerment. Encourage your team to seek growth and development opportunities. This might involve mentoring, coaching, or providing access to courses and workshops. Learning opportunities empower your team to stay adaptable and resourceful.

Step 7: Showing Gratitude

Acknowledge and celebrate your team's achievements, both big and small. Gratitude boosts morale, reinforces the value of contributions, and encourages a sense of pride and ownership. Celebrate milestones as a team to foster a culture of shared success. Here the link to the newsletter edition about how to exhibit gratitude the right way.

Step 8: Offering Constructive Feedback

Empowerment also involves providing constructive feedback. Offer guidance and support when needed, but do so constructively and empathetically. Focus on coaching rather than criticizing, helping team members grow while maintaining their confidence.

Step 9: Delegating What Does Not Need Leadership Attention

Effective leadership involves delegating responsibilities and tasks to your team members. If a task does not require your unique leadership involvement, delegate it to the right team member (as you have built real relationships with your team members, you know who “the right team member” is). Delegating allows you to focus on what truly needs your attention while empowering your team to handle other aspects efficiently.

Step 10: Being Approachable and Avoiding Bottlenecks

Delegating and empowerment do not mean leaving your teams alone. Teams and team members want to be led. Lead the smooth way—neither micromanaging nor leaving people alone. Find the right balance to direct your time, attention, and energy to solving the challenges that make a difference and need your leadership attention.

Empowerment Is about Creating a Dynamic Balance between Autonomy and Guidance?

Empowerment is about creating a dynamic balance between autonomy and guidance, setting your team up for success while ensuring they know when to seek your support. By following these steps and embracing these rules, you can empower your team effectively, harnessing their potential to achieve remarkable results.

Why not use this week to check whether you have built trust and a culture of accountability? If so, why not use the power of empowerment. Please share with me and us your observations!

Here's to taking another leadership shot!
