Empowering Your People...

Empowering Your People...

As a business owner, what's one of your top roles?

Yes I know it's all about sales, profit, customers, marketing etc etc etc...

But for me, one of your top roles is to Empower Your Team...

To support and guide them to be the best they can possibly be...

An asset to you and your business...

Yes, I know you could put all the effort into doing that and they could leave of course they could...

I wish I had a penny for every time I'd heard "But what if I train them and they leave?"

My response has always been "What if you don't and they stay?"

Your business will be stunted by 2 things You and Your team...

Your mindset is a topic for another newsletter, today I want to focus on your team...

In the last couple of weeks, I've been focusing on your frogs ??...

Today I'm going to talk to you about monkeys...

Stay with me here I've not totally lost the plot...

So, what do I mean?

Do you remember those times when someone says have you got a minute which is never a minute...

Or

Can you just help me with...

They (your team) are bringing their problems, and challenges, to your door they want to give you their monkeys...

And you being the helpful person that you are say "sure" often through gritted teeth cos let's face it you've got loads of your own stuff to do...

So, they give you their monkeys and come 5 pm they head off home to do whatever it is they do at the end of the day, and you...

Well, you're still trying to clear your 'to-do list' which you've not completed because of the amount of time you spent dealing with other people's monkeys...

Sound familiar?

Accepting your team's monkeys is not empowering them to be the best they can be, in fact, it's moving in the opposite direction...

You're training them to be dependent on you...

You're making yourself the 'hub' of the business...

And what happens when you remove the hub from a wheel or business?

It collapses...

And who's left to pick up the pieces?

Who's left to fix everything if indeed it can be fixed?

Yep, that would be you...

It's often at this point that many people decided this thing called business is just too hard so they go get themselves a job or they go back to being a one-person business, not that there is anything wrong with being a one-person business but in doing so you will stunt the growth of your business and if you have a fabulous product or service you will deny people the joy of experiencing that product or service...

So, what can you do about it?

You can 'Empower' your people to be the best they can be...

Don't allow them to come to you with an issue, make them come to you with a potential solution...

Is it time-consuming? Yep, it can be...

Is it frustrating? Yep, it can be that too for both you and them...

Is it worth pursuing? Absolutely...

Think back to being a child did your parents tie your shoelaces for you or go through the pain of teaching you to do it yourself?

It's the same with your team to Empower them you have to teach them how to do it for themselves and for the good of you, your customers/clients, and your business...

Next week I'll dive into the 'Circle of Business' and the 4 T's you need to apply in your business...

If you need any help book a 15-minute call I'm here to help...

Great Newsletter Sue and a really useful perspective. I am a fan of the phrase "Not my Monkey, not my Circus" which is often so applicable (and a pleasure to utter ??). It's not always easy to say no to requests for help and guidance though (especially if it really is your Circus), but just remembering that your responsibility is to empower and grow your people, as you say in your opening, helps.
