Empowering Your Health: The Importance of Self-Advocacy in Healthcare

Today marks the anniversary of my mother's passing. She remains a constant presence in my thoughts, her teachings on embracing life and living it fully ingrained in my being. A faithful wife and devoted mother of five, she never uttered a complaint. Her unwavering faith led her to attend Mass every Sunday and recite the rosary devoutly. Despite her health struggles, she never shied away from her responsibilities, whether it was grocery shopping or volunteering at the soup kitchen.

Her radiant smile illuminated every room, and bringing joy to others was her delight. I vividly recall the day she fell ill with a stomach bug. Seeking medical advice, I was met with indifference from her primary care physician, who dismissed her symptoms. Administering over-the-counter medication only exacerbated her condition, leading to a critical situation where she required urgent hospitalization.

It was then discovered she needed surgery for intestinal blockage, a procedure her frail body could barely endure. Tragically, she passed away at the age of 67, her chance for surgery denied by her weakened state. Reflecting on her ordeal, I recognize the importance of advocating for oneself in matters of healthcare. Researching physicians, asking questions, and seeking second opinions are imperative steps toward ensuring proper care.

The haunting question of whether a more proactive approach from her doctor could have altered her outcome lingers. Nonetheless, I am committed to applying the lessons learned from her experience to my own healthcare journey, advocating diligently for answers and solutions. These are the lessons that will guide me as I navigate the complexities of life and health.
