Data mesh – an innovative approach to data governance?

Data mesh is a fairly new concept that has captured the market surprisingly quickly. Despite some exaggerations and aberrations, as with any trend, it appears to have hit a nerve in many organizations.

It is becoming widely adopted across various industries, and many organizations are pondering the concept. In some respects, data mesh is trying to address the challenge brought about because of the shortcomings of centralized data teams: resource constraints and limited domain knowledge.

Data mesh is not necessarily a technology or an architecture. Instead, it can be more about an organization’s approach to processes and data governance – one might even use the term data culture.

Stefan Markus and Torsten Priebe, CTO at Simplity, presented and published a paper at the 2021 IEEE International Conference on Big Data titled Finding Your Way Through the Jungle of Big Data Architectures where they reviewed the state of various analytical data architectures that have been proposed over recent years. They represented them in a structured form, making them more comparable and identifying the overlaps and dependencies. To be formally sound, they used the DAMA-DMBOK and ArchiMate to represent architecture paradigms such as logical data warehouse, data fabric, and of course, data mesh.
