Miss EmpowHer: What does women's empowerment mean to you? Why is it important?

Festicia Bovell: To me, women empowerment means fostering an environment where women are encouraged and supported in their growth, progress, and success. It ensures that every woman has the tools and confidence needed to reach her full potential and make a meaningful impact in her community and beyond. It's important because it creates opportunities for women to thrive, break down barriers to equity, and celebrate our achievements.?

Miss EmpowHer: What advice would you give to other women looking to succeed in your industry? What qualities are the most important and what skills should they focus on developing?

Festicia Bovell: Embrace the experiences that shape your unique perspective and bring depth to your work. Your lived experience, culture, and personal interests can inspire strategic ideas for clients or even drive projects you're passionate about pursuing. Focus on developing essential skills such as writing, verbal communication, and problem-solving. Strong writing is critical at every level, whether you're crafting an email, developing a media plan, or shaping key messages. Mastering the art of strategic writing ensures your ideas resonate and drive results. Equally important is the ability to think ten steps ahead and tackle challenges with confidence. Problem-solving is a skill that separates good from great professionals. By learning to anticipate needs, create solutions, and implement systems to stay organized, you'll not only excel individually but also contribute meaningfully to your team’s success.?

Miss EmpowHer: Tell us about a woman who has influenced your career and how their guidance has impacted your professional growth.

Festicia Bovell: Women have been instrumental in my career growth, and I’m deeply grateful for their support. When I think of someone who has influenced my professional journey, Jenna Caldwell immediately comes to mind. We met during my undergraduate years at American University, where we both worked on The Blackprint, the only Black-led publication on campus highlighting stories of students of color.??

As a freshman, I vividly remember pitching ideas to Jenna, who was then Editor-in-Chief. She was always encouraging, fostering my confidence in ways that assured me I belonged in that space and had skills worth developing. By the time I became Editor-in-Chief during my senior year, the foundation Jenna had built and the confidence she instilled in me reminded me that I had what it took to lead. I aimed to honor the legacy she and other women before her played a part in creating while paving the way for the following team.??

Even after graduation, Jenna and I stayed connected, continuing to support each other’s professional growth as we built careers in different areas of the communications industry. She’s always been a source of honest advice and genuine guidance, helping me navigate roadblocks with clarity. Her mentorship was a key factor in my decision to launch my own magazine, and I know I can always count on her to listen, provide feedback, or offer support. I’m so grateful our paths crossed when they did and that we continue to uplift each other to this day.

Miss EmpowHer: How do you handle work-related stress and pressure, and what techniques or practices do you use to maintain your well-being while pursuing a successful career?

Festicia Bovell: I manage work-related stress and pressure through a combination of mindfulness, prioritization, and intentional self-care. In moments of high stress, I focus on identifying the most effective solution to the task at hand and remind myself that no single professional challenge is insurmountable. This perspective helps me stay grounded and maintain a sense of control. Outside of work, I prioritize activities that recharge me. Regular workouts, quality time with friends and family, and moments of solitude allow me to decompress and try my best to intentionally remove work-related conversations from those spaces. Being the Editor-in-Chief of my own magazine is another valuable outlet for stress relief, even though it’s technically still work. Writing, editing articles, and designing graphics let me shift from a corporate mindset to a more creative and fulfilling one. This creative expression not only serves as a mental reset but also allows me to return to my full-time role with renewed energy and focus.

Miss EmpowHer: Can you share any lessons or insights you have gained from failures or setbacks in your career, and how you have turned them into opportunities for growth and learning?

Festicia Bovell: My setbacks have taught me that I should never be afraid to be seen trying-every effort brings valuable lessons that propel you forward with greater confidence. These experiences have strengthened my ability to present new ideas, develop strategies, and take action without allowing doubts to cloud my judgment. I remind myself of the incredible ways my hard work and dedication have elevated me in the past, reinforcing my belief in the possibilities ahead.? I never let setbacks define my future. While things may not always go as planned, I trust that persistence and alignment with my goals will ultimately lead to success. I remind myself that I can achieve anything I set my mind to as long as I remain dedicated and focused on the future I deserve.? Most importantly, I’ve learned that timing is everything. Setbacks often carry lessons I need to grow, and I’ve come to appreciate the value of giving myself time to reflect, learn, and prepare for the next chapter, rather than rushing through challenges without understanding their purpose.

"My setbacks have taught me that I should never be afraid to be seen trying- every effort brings valuable lessons that propel you forward with greater confidence. These experiences have strengthened my ability to present new ideas, develop strategies, and take action without allowing doubts to cloud my judgment."

Miss EmpowHer: Can you share any strategies or tips for building a successful network and fostering meaningful professional relationships that have helped you in your career?

Festicia Bovell: To build a successful network and foster meaningful professional relationships, you must strike a balance between being genuine and intentional. Finding common interests and creating mutually beneficial opportunities have been key for me. As a natural extrovert who loves learning about others, I’ve found that showing up as my authentic self—not just my professional title—has significantly contributed to my strong network.??

It’s important to share the passions that make you unique, whether it’s music, cooking, reading, or dancing, even if they don’t directly relate to your profession. You might work in tech or marketing, but sharing a recent recipe you’ve tried or a book you’re reading can spark unexpected connections. You never know who might share your interests and want to continue the conversation.??

Miss EmpowHer: What strategies or tactics do you use for setting and achieving your career goals, and how do you stay motivated and focused on your objectives?

Festicia Bovell: I am a first-generation college graduate, a Caribbean woman, and a native New Yorker; I'm convinced this combo comes with an extra level of audacity and confidence that I will always embrace. I have no choice but to achieve all of my goals because no one else will do it for me. I deserve the best in life, and my future is shaped by the decisions I make today. This mindset is the foundation of my motivation.

I use vision boards, particularly Pinterest boards, to visualize the life I aspire to create. This practice helps me turn abstract goals into something I can visualize, which I break down into actionable steps. By focusing on smaller, achievable milestones, I create momentum toward my larger ambitions.

Recently, Les Alfred described daily habits as "daily deposits in becoming the person I want to be." This resonated deeply with me, reminding me that my future success depends on the healthy habits I implement now. I approach each day as an opportunity to build a foundation for the version of myself I’m striving to become.

I’m also intentional about tracking my progress. I conduct monthly check-ins to review my progress on goals, reassess priorities, and make adjustments as needed. This regular reflection ensures I remain focused, adaptable, and aligned with my long-term vision.

"I have no choice but to achieve all of my goals because no one else will do it for me. I deserve the best in life, and my future is shaped by the decisions I make today. This mindset is the foundation of my motivation."

Miss EmpowHer: What motivated you to choose your current career field, and what do you find most fulfilling about your work?

Festicia Bovell: Reading The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison in high school sparked my passion for working in communications and media. My English teacher emphasized the power of media representation and its profound influence on public perception and behavior. The novel highlights how early this impact began and its harmful effects, particularly on the Black community. That realization inspired me to be part of the "behind-the-scenes" decision-making that shapes what the public consumes, ensuring accurate and meaningful representation for underrepresented communities.

In my full-time role, the most fulfilling moments are when I can contribute to large-scale campaigns, bringing a unique perspective shaped by my lived experience. As the founder of FOCUS Magazine, I find joy in sharing stories from underrepresented communities and creating a platform for my peers to showcase their talents and interests in a collaborative, empowering space.?

Miss EmpowHer: Can you discuss any specific trends or changes in your industry that you see impacting careers, and how you are preparing to adapt to these changes?

Festicia Bovell: While this trend isn't necessarily new, the creator economy and content creation continue to grow in our industry, becoming even more integral to brand storytelling and audience engagement. Emerging micro-content platforms have enabled creators to build highly engaged, niche communities. This shift has positioned creators as key collaborators for brands seeking to connect with specific audiences authentically. I am adapting to these changes by keeping my finger on the pulse of what's trending and keeping creators who align with brand messaging at the forefront of my mind for future opportunities.?

Miss EmpowHer: What advice do you have for individuals who are starting their careers or looking to make a career change, based on your own experiences and lessons learned?

Festicia Bovell: It’s essential to approach the early stages of your career with curiosity and a willingness to learn. Be a sponge—absorb as much knowledge and experience as you can, even if you're unsure of your long-term direction. Each experience, whether positive or not, plays a valuable role in shaping your career path. Sometimes, realizing what you don’t enjoy doing can be just as important as discovering what you’re passionate about, as it helps guide you toward the roles and industries that align with your interests and strengths. Networking is another crucial component for both starting and pivoting your career. Focus on building relationships not just upward but laterally—your peers today could become key collaborators or supporters tomorrow. Mentorship is equally important. Seek out people in roles or industries that inspire you and learn from their experiences. Don’t be afraid to seek guidance—they’ve likely been in your shoes and can provide invaluable insights that aren’t immediately obvious. Having a mentor can help you navigate challenges, refine your goals, and even open doors to new opportunities. Finally, embrace the journey and allow room for flexibility. Your path might not be linear, and that’s okay.

Miss EmpowHer: How do you approach professional development and continuous learning to enhance your skills and stay relevant in your industry??

Festicia Bovell: I regularly check in with myself to evaluate where I’d like to be in the next 5 to 10 years and create a detailed roadmap outlining the steps to get there. This involves breaking my goals into smaller, actionable milestones and identifying the specific skills, experiences, and knowledge I need to acquire.?

Networking plays a vital role in my development strategy. I connect with individuals currently in the positions I aspire to reach. I plan informational interviews or casual coffee chats to seek their guidance and advice. I’ve learned that it’s crucial to remain open-minded during these conversations because, "you don’t know what you don’t know."?

Additionally, I stay informed by keeping up with industry news, trends, and innovations. This includes subscribing to relevant newsletters, attending webinars or conferences, and actively engaging with thought leaders on platforms like LinkedIn. Being informed lets me keep my finger on the pulse and identify emerging opportunities in my field.

When new projects or initiatives arise at work, I proactively raise my hand for opportunities that align with the skills I’m looking to enhance. Whether it’s leading a team on a high-profile project or experimenting with a new communication strategy, these experiences help me build the expertise I need to advance my career. By combining forward-thinking planning, consistent skill-building, and strategic networking, I ensure I’m always moving closer to achieving my long-term goals.

Miss EmpowHer: Can you discuss any significant achievements or accomplishments in your career that you are particularly proud of and what you learned from those experiences?

Festicia Bovell: In my full-time role, I take pride in identifying unique opportunities that allow clients to stand out in competitive markets. I excel at aligning client and brand goals with trending moments to deliver impactful results. This proactive approach not only helps clients achieve visibility but also positions them as leaders within their industries.

With FOCUS Magazine, I am particularly proud of conceptualizing, designing, and publishing two print editions. These magazines serve as tangible archives that celebrate the journeys and creative expressions of individuals across various mediums. By providing a platform where peers can showcase their interests, skills, and stories, I’ve created a space that uplifts and connects creatives in meaningful ways.

Through these experiences, I’ve learned that my most authentic self—along with the values I hold dear—can coexist with my professional passions. I recognize that these facets of identity and work are not always given room to thrive together, so I am incredibly grateful to have found opportunities where they intersect. This alignment not only fuels my professional growth but also reinforces my belief in the power of authenticity and purpose-driven work. I hope that one day my work will positively resonate with my community in the same way The Bluest Eye resonated and inspired me.

Miss EmpowHer: How do you balance your career ambitions with other aspects of your life, such as family, hobbies, and personal well-being?

Festicia Bovell: I am intentional about prioritizing time for family, hobbies, and personal well-being. While I deeply value my career, I’ve made a commitment to never let it overshadow what truly matters in life. Success in my professional life means little if it comes at the cost of missing out on moments with loved ones or neglecting my own health and happiness. When I reflect on my life years from now, I want to feel fulfilled not just by my work achievements but also by the memories I’ve made with the people I care about and the joy I’ve found in pursuing my passions.? To uphold this balance, I schedule quality time with friends and family just as I would a professional commitment. Whether it’s a casual dinner, a trip to visit them in person or simply a phone call, I treat these moments as non-negotiable. I also give myself the grace to rest without guilt. Additionally, I make space for hobbies that bring me joy and creativity. These activities not only enrich my personal life but also fuel my professional inspiration-- I cannot show up as my best self professionally if I am not able to take care of my personal life.?

Miss EmpowHer: Are there any specific books, podcasts, email newsletters, thought leaders/influencers, or training courses/programs that you would recommend for personal or professional growth?

Festicia Bovell: PR Girl Manifesto (both their IG and Newsletter), The Social Juice Newsletter, Balanced Black Girl Podcast, The Journey with Morgan DeBaun Podcast, The Deep Dive Newsletter, Marketing Over Coffee Podcast, The Daily Podcast.?
