Women in Tech Week is happening across the UK this week, thank to Dr Vanessa Vallely OBE , team WeAreTechWomen and many Tech firms and brands. Many events are taking place to showcase brilliant talents and work.
This is an exciting time to celebrate, uplift, and acknowledge the immense contributions of women in the technology sector. As the industry continues to evolve, women are breaking barriers, driving innovation, and paving the way for future generations. It is particularly inspiring to see the contributions of Black women in tech, who not only face the challenges of a traditionally male-dominated industry but also navigate systemic barriers related to race and representation.
This week, we want to spotlight and celebrate incredible women like Dr. Vanessa Vallely OBE, Rav Bumbra, Akua Opong CITP MBCS FRSA Alina Timofeeva Flavilla Fongang GTA Black Women In Tech Coding Black Females Rose Fredua Varsha Amin Kike Oniwinde Agoro and so many more, who are all dedicated to inspiring and empowering women in tech. Their commitment to impacting others is making a profound difference in creating more inclusive and diverse workplaces.
Twenty-two years ago, I graduated with a 2:1 honours degree in Business & Information Technology. I secured my dream job with 壳牌 . Shortly, my dream of starting a career in tech was shattered. I was told by a trainer who was helping the us get onboard with Tech that women don't code. Although I worked in tech, I didn't immerse myself in coding. Instead, I managed global multi-million dollar IT and change programs. Although we see many women and black professionals entering tech, many are also exiting due to a lack of opportunities, lack of self-confidence, toxic cultures, sexism, and racism.
As we celebrate Black History Month, we must change this narrative. Girls can code. Black women can thrive in Tech. Everyone can code. The future is tech, and it's time to demonstrate full access to tech for all.
Over the past few months, I have had the honor of partnering with tech firms and industry leaders to provide bespoke coaching programs designed to equip women, especially Black women, with the tools and confidence to excel in their tech careers. These programs are part of a broader effort to create environments where women can thrive, innovate, and lead.
Here are my top 7 tips for building a successful and fulfilling career in tech:
1. Increase Your Self-awareness
Understand your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth. Self-awareness is key to making informed decisions about your career trajectory and recognizing where you can add the most value.
2. Set Clear, SMART Career Goals
Establish goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Having a clear vision helps you stay focused, track your progress, and adjust your path as needed.
3. Prioritise Your Professional Development
Technology is an ever-changing field, so continual learning is essential. Stay updated with the latest advancements, take on new challenges, and invest in acquiring new skills that can advance your career.
4. Prioritise Your Mental Health
The tech industry can be fast-paced and demanding. Ensure that you are managing stress, taking breaks, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Your mental health is foundational to long-term success.
5. Craft Your Professional Brand and Network (Internally and Externally)
Be intentional about building your professional identity. Establish your expertise and thought leadership within your organization and beyond. Networking is a powerful tool for career growth—connect with peers, mentors, and industry leaders to broaden your opportunities.
6. Your Mindset is Your Compass: Practice a Growth & Positive Mindset
In tech, challenges and setbacks are inevitable. Embrace a growth mindset—believe that your abilities can develop through dedication and hard work. This mindset fuels creativity and resilience.

7. Have a Support System (Sponsors, Mentors, and a Coach)
Surround yourself with people who will champion your career. A strong support system, including mentors, sponsors, and coaches, can offer guidance, open doors to new opportunities, and provide valuable insights.
And Finally—Don’t Forget to Have Fun!
As you navigate your career in tech, remember to enjoy the process. Celebrate your successes, learn from your challenges, and cherish the journey.
Women in Tech Week is a powerful reminder of the incredible talent, innovation, and resilience that women bring to the tech industry. As we continue to break barriers, let’s also commit to supporting one another, sharing knowledge, and driving forward a vision of equality and diversity in tech.
To all the trailblazing Women in Tech—keep shining! You are shaping the future of technology, and your contributions are invaluable.
