Empowering Women in Leadership: Navigating the Landscape of Leadership Training
As we welcome and congratulate the UK's first ever Female Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, the conversation around women in leadership is more pertinent than ever. As CEO of one of the largest CMI centres in the UK, I am proud to champion initiatives that empower women to reach their full potential and fully address the gender gap in senior positions across Public and Private sectors. Our Women in Leadership Programme is designed to address the unique challenges faced by women in leadership roles, taking the theory from our non-gender focussed leadership and strategy training programmes and refracting it through the prism of the female experience. Generic training options are still a legitimate choice for female executives, and selecting these options is a personal journey, guided by individual preferences and career goals, but this programme does present an opportunity for a female only networking space at a strategic level.
One of our partners, The 30% Club, an organisation dedicated to achieving a minimum of 30% female representation on boards and in senior management roles, underscores the importance of gender diversity in leadership. Their efforts have been instrumental in highlighting the gender disparity in corporate leadership and driving meaningful change. Yet, despite significant progress, the gender pay gap remains a persistent issue. According to the Office for National Statistics, the gender pay gap among full-time employees in the UK was 7.4% in 2022, reflecting the ongoing need for targeted interventions to promote gender equality.
Leadership and strategy training refracted through the prism of the female experience is not only legitimate but essential. Women face distinct challenges in the workplace, including unconscious bias, work-life balance pressures, and a lack of role models within male dominated industries. Our Women in Leadership Programme addresses these challenges head-on, providing a supportive environment where women can share experiences, develop tailored strategies, and build a network of peers. This programme is designed to empower women by equipping them with the tools and confidence needed to navigate these obstacles and excel in leadership roles.
The UK government has set ambitious targets for gender equality, aiming to eliminate the gender pay gap and promote greater representation of women in leadership positions. Initiatives such as the Women in Leadership Programme align with these goals by fostering an environment where women can thrive. By providing tailored training and support, we are helping to bridge the gap and create a more equitable business landscape.

The recent #CMIWomenConference highlighted the importance of supporting women in leadership through a combination of tailored programmes and broader initiatives. Speakers emphasised the need for both targeted and generic training to create a well-rounded approach to leadership development. The conference reinforced the idea that there is no one-size-fits-all solution; rather, a diverse array of training options allows women to choose the path that best suits their individual needs and career goals.
At InPD, we are committed to offering high-quality training programmes that empower women to achieve their full potential. Our Women in Leadership Programme is just one example of how we are working to support gender equality in leadership. By providing a range of training options, we ensure that every individual can find the right fit for their professional development.
In conclusion, the legitimacy of leadership and strategy training, whether gender-specific or generic, lies in its ability to meet the needs of the individual. As we continue to champion women in leadership, it is crucial to offer a variety of programmes that cater to diverse experiences and preferences. Together, we can work towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all leaders.
