Empowering Women in CRE: Insights from Marie Taylor, EVP of NAI Capital Commercial

March 2024 | J.C. Casillas , Managing Director NAI Capital Commercial

To commemorate Women’s History Month, I had the opportunity to conduct a thoughtful and informative Q&A with Marie Taylor, Executive Vice President of NAI Capital Commercial’s Investment Services Group in the Pasadena office.

Marie Taylor, the top female producer ranked in the 2023 Capital Club, shares her notable achievements, and offers invaluable advice for navigating the commercial real estate industry, particularly for aspiring women professionals.

Here are the questions I posed to Marie and the insightful responses she shares with us:

Q: At this point in your career, having just celebrated your 15th anniversary with NAI Capital Commercial, what does this achievement represent for you?

A: Achieving consistent top performance over the span of fifteen years holds profound significance for me. It solidifies the realization that I can sustainably pursue my passion and livelihood in this challenging industry. Reflecting on my journey, it's evident that the initial uncertainties of the first-year pale in comparison to the growth and resilience gained over time. I owe much of this success to the invaluable guidance and support from mentors and colleagues who have been instrumental in shaping my career path. Their encouragement and wisdom have been invaluable pillars throughout my journey.

Q: What strategies or tactics have you found most effective in navigating challenges and breaking through barriers in the commercial real estate industry?

A: Breaking through barriers in the commercial real estate industry requires a combination of strategic approaches and personal attributes. While I initially stumbled into this field, completing my first deal in 1997 marked a pivotal moment where I recognized my passion and aptitude for the industry. Key strategies that have propelled me forward include a genuine desire for this career, unwavering belief in my abilities, persistent efforts, determination, and a strong work ethic. These qualities have served as my guiding principles, enabling me to navigate challenges and achieve sustained success in the competitive landscape of commercial real estate.

Q: What advice would you give to women who aspire to excel in the commercial real estate industry, particularly in terms of overcoming obstacles and carving out their own path to success?

A: Firstly, consider working within a team during your initial years in the industry. Being under someone's mentorship can provide invaluable learning opportunities and guidance. Stay open to learning and be receptive to coaching. Secondly, prioritize investing your time in building your business rather than getting bogged down in administrative tasks. Dedicate significant hours to client acquisition and relationship-building, even if it means working seven days a week initially. Finally, utilize your co-brokers to complement your strengths and expand your network. Foster positive relationships not only with colleagues but also with competitors and clients. Remember to find joy in your work, laugh often, and celebrate your achievements along the way.

Marie Taylor's practical insights offer a roadmap for success in commercial real estate brokerage, emphasizing perseverance, collaboration, and the importance of building meaningful connections – and as Marie enthusiastically states, “Don't forget to celebrate your achievements along the way!” Her experience and advice greatly contribute to our NAI Capital Commercial family.
