Empowering Women in Architecture

Empowering Women in Architecture

As International Women's Day approaches, I'm excited to shine a light on a profession close to my heart – Architecture. A career where women can truly thrive, break barriers, and inspire the next generation.

Becoming an architect isn't for the faint of heart; it demands rigorous training, serious dedication and hard work. Yet, the impact of well-designed spaces extends far beyond mere aesthetics and profoundly influences our daily lives.

Consider the spaces you use, live and work in every day. How much does architecture influence your routines and experiences?

As women, we bring invaluable qualities and distinct perspectives to the table – our listening skills, empathy, and adept problem-solving abilities.

These attributes enable us to effectively create spaces that meet a diverse range of needs, from the practical and intricate demands of family homes to functional layouts that really serve the needs of our clients’ lifestyles – not to mention prioritising a good sized boot room!

It’s important to recognise that neither gender holds a monopoly on skillsets when it comes to architecture. Our differences are not limitations, but rather complementary assets that enrich the collaborative process within the field.

By embracing diversity in perspectives and approaches, architectural teams can leverage the full spectrum of talents to create innovative spaces that truly resonate with homeowners. In fostering an environment where all voices are valued and respected, we not only empower individuals to reach their full potential but also elevate the quality and impact of our work.

There's a common misconception that architecture lacks flexibility, particularly for women seeking travel, managing family commitments, or simply a better work-life balance. I believe there are an increasing number of options and opportunities available to accommodate both.

I founded Absolute Architecture when my children were young. As you can imagine it's been tough at times, but despite these challenges the practice has gone from strength to strength over the last 15 years.

Our success is a testament to our commitment to flexibility and inclusivity, and thanks to our amazing team – both male and female – we've built something truly special here.

For me, the potential to run my own practice offered a balanced work-life dynamic, allowing me to continue to build my career whilst also supporting my children. In turn, I now also provide opportunities for my team to work a nine-day fortnight or remotely as needed.

But it's not just about us – it's about paving the way for future aspiring architects.

Training and achieving qualifications, while gaining practical experience in-house is a route not many know about. Take Berenice, for example, one of our talented Architectural Assistants. Having studied in France and Poland, Berenice has been working in our offices in Newbury whilst studying towards her Stage 3 qualification. She brings a unique perspective and international experience to our team, highlighting the diverse ways in which you can achieve your goals.

Mentoring lies at the heart of Absolute Architecture's ethos, with our team currently mentoring two female students from Reading University. Providing support to the next generation of female architects is not just a responsibility but also an opportunity to cultivate diversity and innovation within the profession, offering the guidance needed to succeed.

Encouraging more women to pursue careers in architecture and STEM fields is crucial. Representation matters, and equal access and support for women enrich the profession with fresh ideas and talents.

Ultimately, confidence is key – both in architecture and in life. Let's ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, receives the support and guidance needed to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the built environment.

Fab article. So much of this holds true for landscape designers too. Confidence grows from seeing your peers achieving and mentorship is so powerful. As well as the formal schemes you mention, I've seen you bring mentoring others into everything you do.
