Empowering Women in Agribusiness: AGRA’s Commitment to Growth and Opportunity

Empowering Women in Agribusiness: AGRA’s Commitment to Growth and Opportunity

Today, AGRA in partnership with Fresh Produce Consortium (FPCK) convened over 300 women in agribusiness to explore opportunities to support women in the sector.?

A recent study by AGRA and CGIAR Gender Impact revealed that women in food systems can do much more than farm—they can lead businesses, increase their earnings, and support other women in doing the same. This finding highlights the power of women-to-women networks, which can help overcome many barriers women face in business; which makes today’s convening of utmost importance.

During the session, AGRA Vice President, Programs Delivery, Prof. Hamadi Boga, emphasized the importance of having strong, inclusive policies to empower women.

He shared that AGRA’s newly revamped Gender Inclusive and Youth division aims to help women create wealth through the Value4Her platform, which supports women agripreneurs by connecting them to markets, resources, and networks.

Whereas, Nana Yaa Amoah, AGRA’s Director of Gender Inclusive and Youth, explained that while women’s access to finance is improving, there is still a long way to go. Women often rely on their wages and savings to fund their businesses. Helping them access formal finance through banks and microfinance institutions will be key to their long-term success.

The session ended with women in the value chain signing a commitment wall- stating how they each will contribute to the growth of their counterparts in the sector.?

We look forward to seeing the realization of these commitments.?

Access to resources, markets and sustainable network is key in women's empowerment programmes. But we need to state clearly the category of women we imply to target and their viability to access the intended opportunities. The majority of women needing this help reside in rural communities with low or poor access to the opportunities because of restrictions that come with the empowerment opportunities. Having worked with NGOs for a long time, I have many times witnessed the fact that benefits does not reach the intended beneficiaries. We need to soften selection criteria for the target women

Access to productive resources such as finance, equipment and land are key to women's full participation in agribusiness. However, we encourage women to venture in other nodes like value addition, aggregation and trading to support them which don't need land access On land, let's encourage government to support formulation of land lease guidelines and agreement to promote land leasing amongst women.
