Empowering Waste Pickers for a Sustainable Future
Tai Frontier
An Eco-Friendly organization that offers Solid Waste Solutions in Urban Areas
On this International Waste Pickers' Day, Tai Frontier reaffirms its commitment to recognising and empowering waste pickers worldwide. These unsung heroes play a crucial role in recycling, yet often face social stigmas and exclusion. In Kenya, the challenges of inclusion persist as waste pickers are viewed as a minority, despite being the backbone of the recycling industry. Discrimination denies them a seat at policy discussions, leaving them vulnerable to manipulation.
Tai Frontier advocates for a shift towards inclusivity, recognising the need for waste pickers to have a voice in shaping the waste management sector. We applaud the Centre for Environmental Justice and Development (CEJAD) for their tireless efforts in mapping the struggles and victories of waste pickers across four counties in Kenya.
This initiative aims to push for inclusive policies, giving waste pickers the platform they deserve. The recent celebration of Global Waste Picker’s Day in Kisumu marked a pivotal moment. CEJAD, in collaboration with waste pickers from Kachok dumpsite, emphasised the importance of organisation and formalisation. The objective is clear – to integrate waste pickers into the formal waste management system.
Recognising waste pickers as professionals is not just a matter of equity; it is essential for the success of the circular economy in Kenya. Their ability to reuse, repair and minimise resource inputs contributes significantly to providing raw materials for the manufacturing industry.
As we celebrate Global Waste Picker’s Day, let us collectively work towards breaking down barriers, advocating for inclusivity and ensuring waste pickers are formally recognised for their indispensable contribution to a sustainable future.
