1. Be purposeful and strategic: Align program goals with overall business and HR strategies, and consider how demographics might change in the next 5 years.

2. Engage leaders: Secure buy-in at the executive level and clearly communicate goals. Identify who will help make the formal mentoring program work.

3. Start small: Recruit and brief a diverse group of mentors and mentees, and establish clear rules about confidentiality to build trust.

4. Train mentors and mentees: Invest time and resources in training to develop relationship-building and conversation skills. Offer ongoing support for mentors.

5. Measure and share: Determine what is most important for the organization and participants. Publicize early wins to build momentum.
