Empowering Students Through Project-Based Learning: The Fountainhead PYP Student Parliament.

The Student Parliament is a forum for students to look at local and global problems, and come up with their own solutions.?

In this context, we encourage students towards an active say in what happens in their grade so that they can meaningfully contribute to the improvement of the grade and school.

The aim of the project is to get students involved in like-minded communities of the grade. To give exposure to how decisions are made and how they can also make some decisions themselves.

The journey commenced with the democratic spirit instilled in students of Grade 6 while inquiring into the Government unit under the transdisciplinary theme- How we Organize ourselves.? In a demonstration of genuine empowerment, they initiated the process by creating and rolling out a Google Form to all the students of Grade 5 & 6 for registering their names for the student government. The fascinating aspect was that this initiative was entirely student-driven, reflecting a commitment to participatory decision-making. Of course, we had teacher mentors who guided them and supported their ideas at each step.

The selection process was designed to prioritize qualities aligned with Fountainhead's core values. Applicants were evaluated based on their responses, ensuring that only those who genuinely embodied the principles of fairness, sustainability, and empathy made it to the next round.?

Once shortlisted, students embarked on an enthusiastic campaign, echoing the school's values. The campaigns not only focused on the candidates' qualifications but also their dedication to sustainability, fostering unity, and maintaining the school's ethos.

The final voting process was a mirror image of India's national election? process, promoting an authentic democratic experience for students. The Head Boy and Head Girl were crowned, and various committees were formed, each assigned specific roles and responsibilities. What was unique is that the students themselves chose the committees they wanted to be a part of, emphasizing self-determination and passion.

The challenges that they are facing in the grade were identified by the students. The significant issues were narrowed down, and the students were asked to brainstorm the possible solutions.?

These committees now play an integral role in ensuring helping the school community by curbing food wastage, maintaining discipline, promoting sustainability, and organizing events. Their initiatives range from conducting read-aloud sessions for younger students to orchestrating cultural celebrations such as the Diwali mela. They create posters, give presentations, and collaborate in small groups.?

They decide to engage their peers about the problems and what they can do to make things better.

The most exceptional outcome of this endeavor was the Grade Action Assembly, led by the members of student parliament. This demonstrated the students' ability to lead and inspire change while upholding Fountainhead's values and principles.

In conclusion, Fountainhead's innovative approach to student governance through project-based learning is a testament to the power of educational innovation. It not only empowers students to shape their own destinies but also instills in them a sense of responsibility, leadership, and the importance of ethical values. This unique initiative stands as a beacon for schools worldwide, exemplifying the true potential of young minds when nurtured with the right educational approach.
