This past weekend, I had the honor of attending a truly inspiring community event that showcased two impactful short films by local filmmaker Sharon Arteaga : “When I Grow Up” and “In Tow.” These films beautifully capture the remarkable journeys of two immigrant single mothers who pour their hearts into raising their daughters, juggling multiple jobs while navigating life’s challenges with unwavering resilience and determination.
As a first-generation Mexican American, the themes explored in these films resonated deeply with me. My parents made the brave choice to leave everything behind in pursuit of a better life for their children. Their selflessness is something I can hardly comprehend, especially considering they raised six of us with my father working as a janitor and my mother on a warehouse assembly line. Despite our modest beginnings, we always had what we needed. Witnessing the struggles of single mothers through these films was an enlightening experience that prompted me to reflect on my own upbringing and the sacrifices my parents made.
One of the most moving moments in the films occurs when both daughters come to the profound realization that their true heroes are their mothers. This poignant message of love and gratitude filled the room, leaving many of us feeling inspired.
I was privileged to be invited by one of the film's co-stars, elected judge Sandra Avila Ramirez , who is a Latina judge in her district. After the screenings, she delivered a compelling message about the importance of representation in our community and shared her dream of becoming an actress—an aspiration fueled by her desire to see more individuals like herself in the industry. Her story embodies the power of perseverance and the significance of role models.
Representing Amplify Credit Union at the event, I was thrilled to share some of the initiatives we’re undertaking to support our community. Being present at events like these nurtures hope and empowerment among community members. A courageous high school senior took the stage to share her own experiences, explaining how the films resonated with her relationship with her mother. As a first-generation Mexican American, she is on track to become the first in her family to attend college, thanks to organizations like Con Mi MADRE , which provide vital guidance on navigating college enrollment and financial aid.
This is precisely why I am passionate about my work. By leveraging my experiences and expertise, I aspire to help families like hers thrive. Individuals who recognize and appreciate their parents' struggles are often the most driven and passionate about their futures. I strive to support them on their journeys through financial literacy, accessible banking options, and preparation for significant life milestones.
I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to those who invited me to this event. It was an incredibly inspiring experience, and I am thankful to be part of an organization that values the strength of families in our community. Together, we can continue to uplift one another and create opportunities for future generations.
