Empowering Startups for Success: The Path to Building Scalable Tech Startups
Insights from my career in technology and an Urgent Call to Attend the Techcelerate Event on June 9th
Introduction:
In the world of startups, failure is a bitter pill to swallow. It can be incredibly disheartening when you believe the responsibility lies solely on your shoulders. I have experienced this disappointment not once but twice during my time at Toshiba and Global Silicon. However, I have come to understand that there are factors beyond our control in business. Focusing on what we can influence and make the most of those opportunities is crucial. However, it is crucial to recognize the critical foundational steps in developing a robust business strategy.
Controlling What We Can:
Success in the startup world is elusive, and the failure rate can be staggering. When I recently posed the question about the failure rate of startups during a presentation, the audience was shocked to learn the truth. Only a few brave souls were aware of the daunting reality. I shared with them a valuable lesson: we can only control what we have an influence over.
While it is true that we cannot control every aspect of our business ventures, we possess the power to influence certain factors. By focusing our attention on these areas, we can make a significant impact on our overall success. Recognizing this distinction allows us to allocate our resources effectively and maximize our potential for positive outcomes.
Importance of Idea Validation:
I have dedicated myself to helping startups succeed by sharing my experiences and insights. One of the critical aspects I emphasize is the journey from ideation to commercialization. While a good idea is essential, it is just the beginning. Startups must validate their ideas to ensure there is a market demand and that their solution effectively solves a customer problem worth paying for.
A solid business strategy sets a company's direction, goals, and objectives. It outlines the steps necessary to achieve success and ensures that all aspects of the business align with the overarching vision. Neglecting these critical steps can lead to confusion, misalignment, and failure.
Startup's Lack of Preparedness:
Sadly, many startups are ill-prepared for the commercialization journey. While interacting with startup communities in Manchester and London, I was astonished by their lack of commercial knowledge.
Passion alone is not enough; entrepreneurs must seek validation and ask the right questions to ensure their idea stands a chance in the market. Merely relying on social media presence and a website is a recipe for disappointment.
Call to Action:
The need for prepared startups is a pressing concern, particularly as other sectors become obsolete, resulting in job losses. We have addressed these challenges in the North West through initiatives like Techcelerate.
On June 9th, we are holding an event titled "Building Scalable Tech Startups from Ground Up - the Techcelerate Way" will take place. As a North West-based tech startup, attending this event is a must.
