The 10 keys to the city now: Why attracting talent, businesses and visitors has never been more integrated
Ten years ago, Resonance started an ambitious project to identify the factors most highly correlated with business formation, talent attraction and visitor expenditure in our cities.
We not only analyzed hundreds of data points from traditional statistical sources such as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, but we also mined user-generated data from online sources like Google, Tripadvisor and Instagram.
This research led to the creation of Resonance’s annual?Best Cities rankings, which are now read by millions of people around the world. In preparing our upcoming 2024 America’s Best Cities Report, we’ve gone back and updated this analysis to reflect the decade ahead. Here are 10 key findings on what’s driving the performance and prosperity of U.S. cities now.

The BMO Centre’s $500-million project kicked off four years ago, in the dark, early days of the pandemic, with the vision to push the building to more than one million square feet and host up to 33,000 people. When it opens in time for Calgary’s iconic annual Stampede festivities this summer, it will do so as the largest convention center in western Canada. The completion of the BMO Centre marks another successful CMLC project and another step in the organization’s mission to empower the future of downtown Calgary and its residents.

Arlington, Virginia, is an inclusive dynamic economic hub just minutes from downtown? Washington DC. Despite its location, the county struggled with business attraction, retention and relocation efforts to support future growth.
Through a series of demographic and economic assessments, target cluster analysis and the incorporation of “All In Arlington” messaging, the Resonance team developed a cohesive narrative that distinguishes Arlington from Washington DC and the surrounding counties.?
Our research and analysis led to the development of five distinct goals, with more than 70 unique strategies and tracking metrics that will help the county realize its vision through placemaking efforts to bring the community together.
