As another school year begins in the Los Angeles area and soon across the nation, I’d like to reinforce how our children’s educators are the unsung heroes of our society, often overworked, underpaid, and undervalued. Despite their dedication, they're constrained by increasingly limited resources down to a tax code that allows only a $500 deduction for classroom expenses when they often spend so much more. This stark contrast to other professions' tax benefits, like deducting all expenses for a private jet (“for business purposes”) underscores a misalignment of priorities in our society.

The beauty of education lies in its power to spark curiosity, foster growth in our children and create the engineers of our future.? Teachers are at the heart of this transformative process, guiding and inspiring the next generation. Their impact reverberates through time, influencing not just individual lives but the very fabric of our communities, society at large and the future we all will live within.
Yet, the reality of our education system is deeply troubling. We often say we support education, but in reality the actions speak otherwise. In my own children's schools - ? schools in a top performing district in California - teachers still face funding issues. At the beginning of each year, they often request supplies via a list to help support our children's needs. For several years, I'd anonymously purchased these supplies in full as soon as the email was sent, ensuring that all kids in the class are supported and that teachers don't need to worry about these basic necessities. While I've been grateful to be in a position to help, it's frankly embarrassing that this need exists in one of the wealthiest nations in the world. Our teachers and students deserve better.
While systemic changes in education funding and support are necessary, recent advancements in artificial intelligence offer a ray of hope where some remarkable strides in AI technology have occurred and can help address some of the challenges teachers face, even if tax codes and budgets haven't caught up. These AI tools have the potential to alleviate some of the burdens on our educators, allowing them to focus more on what truly matters - inspiring and educating our children. .
