Empowering Nigeria's Poultry Industry: Bridging The Knowledge?Gap

The poultry industry in Nigeria is indeed promising, but faces numerous challenges such as rising input costs, market access issues, logistics, quality, and general supply chain risks. In 2023, the cost of frozen chicken per kilogram was around N2,776 per kg (USD2.16), a 100% rise from 2022 (statista.com), and again has now skyrocketed to about N4,000 per kg (USD3.1) depending on where you live in Nigeria (National Bureau of Statistics, March 2024).

Moreover, the lack of knowledge exacerbates these challenges for poultry farmers, particularly in regions where there is a critical mass of poultry farmers like Kaduna State, Lagos State, Ogun State, Abia State, Anambra State, and Nasarawa State.

Poultry Farmers Training Kaduna, Nigeria.

The Poultry Supply Chain De-risking Program (POS-DerP), is a collaborative effort between Pullus Africa and Heifer Nigeria with a goal to train 5,000 poultry farmers in two Northern states. In February 2024, we began with sensitization workshops and then training across the different states. It has been a stretching and fulfilling exercise having already surpassed the 2,000 mark within a span of two months. Despite this, the demand for training pours daily across our different social media pages and through phone calls from farmers from across Nigeria expressing a pressing need for knowledge enhancement in poultry farming.?

Cluster Leaders Training, Kaduna.

From the bustling city of Port Harcourt to the tranquil landscapes of Benue, and from the vibrant markets of Anambra to the corridors of power in Abuja, farmers are clamouring for essential training and empowerment to improve their poultry practices. This demand further resonates strongly across states like Osun, Lagos, Enugu, Ogun, Edo, and Abia, highlighting a nationwide thirst for expertise in poultry husbandry. Behind this demand lies a stark reality: many poultry farmers are grappling with avoidable losses due to diseases and conditions that could have been prevented with proper training. The event of climate change in poultry practices also comes up as a crucial area of support that is needed for these farmers.

Bridging the knowledge gap will have a tremendous effect on the output of poultry farmers thereby greatly reducing the risks they are exposed to, increasing their sustainability, productivity, and profitability. These trainings emerge as a beacon of hope, offering farmers invaluable insights, knowledge on best practices, and innovative techniques to simplify and scale their operations.

Our vision remains the same at Pullus Africa. Our mission is to build the largest network of productive and profitable poultry farmers. We will continue to achieve this by focusing on boosting the poultry supply chain using technology to improve local poultry production by facilitating farmers’ access to guaranteed market, finance, quality input, advisory, and production services, for poultry farmers in Nigeria and Africa.
