Navigating the path from school to a successful career is a crucial journey for students, and the role of schools in providing effective career guidance cannot be overstated. However, the recent findings by Ofsted in 2023 have highlighted the challenges that schools face in delivering high-quality careers programs. In this blog post, we will delve into these challenges and discuss how employers and industry leaders can play a pivotal role in addressing them.
Limited Time and Resources:
Delivering comprehensive career guidance in schools seems to be a challenging task due to the constraints of time and resources. According to Ofsted's analysis, limited resources prevent many schools from dedicating sufficient time to career guidance. Staffing levels, high turnover, and funding constraints add to these challenges. Therefore, employers and industry leaders must understand these limitations to provide support to schools seeking to improve their career guidance programs.
Strategic Priority vs. Less Effective Practice:
Career guidance is a crucial aspect of any school's strategic priorities. However, according to Ofsted, around 25% of schools fail to implement effective practices. Successful schools adopt a "whole-school" approach that involves strong leadership. Collaboration between staff members, career specialists, and school leaders is essential to ensure a cohesive and effective approach. Employers can also play a crucial role in fostering such collaboration.
Underdeveloped Careers Guidance in Key Stage 3:
Ofsted's review identifies a gap in career guidance at Key Stage 3, especially for Year 7 students. Some schools struggle to articulate clear aims for this age group, and the purpose of career guidance is less explicit. Employers can contribute by engaging with schools to help shape and support their career programs, starting from the early stages of students' education.

Unbalanced Advice on Technical Routes:
It's important to note that not all schools provide balanced advice on technical routes, which can lead to a potential mismatch between students' interests and available opportunities. To address this issue, employers can work together with schools to ensure strategic planning that caters to the diverse needs of individual students. This collaboration promotes unbiased guidance that encompasses both academic and technical options, helping students make informed decisions about their future career paths.
Impact of Home Working on Work Experience:
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant changes in the way we work, affecting the availability of work experience opportunities for students. Due to this, some employers have stopped offering work experience, which has made it difficult for schools to find suitable alternatives. However, employers can help by providing virtual or remote work experience options, which can enable schools to adapt to the changing circumstances.
Gaps in Understanding of T Levels:
While schools generally understand and promote apprenticeships, there are gaps in teachers' understanding of T levels. Employers can contribute by helping schools bridge this knowledge gap, ensuring that technical pathways, including T levels, are promoted equally alongside academic routes.

Having provided both in person work experience and virtual work experience I can honestly say both are invaluable. Not only do the students learn, so did we. They brought ideas and questions to the tasks that we hadn't even dreamt of. If you're thinking about providing work experience of any kind, do it! It's worth it.
