As we are celebrating Christmas and bringing new hopes for the new year, there is a yogic community around the world, especially in India, celebrating the 5160th anniversary of the yogic text of the Bhagavad Gita. This moment inspired me to share one piece of the insightful wisdom of the ancient yogic text, which can be a guiding needle for project managers and leaders to seek clarity, embrace team empowerment, and develop resilience.
WHAT IS BHAGAVAD GITA?
Before I start, let me introduce the Bhagavad Gita, in case you have never heard of it. It is an ancient book of yogic wisdom, written as a conversation between a curious leader named Arjuna and a mystic mentor, Lord Krishna. For me personally, it is a book of leadership and personal development. In its 700 verses, the book covers many aspects of leadership and the challenges faced by modern leaders. In this article, I will discuss one of them through the example of verse 47 of chapter 2.
A VERSE OF KARMA YOGA
karma?y-evādhikāras te mā phale?hu kadāchana
mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te sa?go ’stvakarma?i ||2.47||
This translates as "Your jurisdiction of authority is limited to Karma only. You never have authority over its fruits (outcome). Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your actions. Never be attached to not performing your duties." BG 2.47
This verse has four parts. Let's explore one by one.
UNDERSTAND THE BOUNDARIES OF AUTHORITY AND CONTROL
The first part defines what is within the boundaries of the authority and control for leaders.
By focusing on the things within their authority, leaders can
FOSTER DETACHMENT FOR OUTCOMES
The second part of the verse defines what is outside of their sphere of control, which is the end result or outcome of the actions. This suggests that leaders should stay detached from the outcome.
Leading with detachment brings benefits such as quality improvement, enhanced creativity, enhanced resilience, better team dynamics, and many more.

BELIEVE IN TEAM EMPOWERMENT
The third part of the verse emphasizes the significance of team empowerment. Leaders must understand that the outcome is always a result of good teamwork. As an individual, a leader could have limitations, but by utilising the complementary strengths of team members, a leader can overcome the weaknesses of individuals. For this, a leader should let go of their ego and empower the team for autonomous and collaborative operations.
With a team-focused approach to leadership, you can
DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE POWER OF INFLUENCE
The fourth part of the verse highlights the risk of inaction. This approach of detachment from the result and team empowerment may create a sense of less control over the result in a leader. This sense of less or no control over the outcome may lead to inaction in the leader.
While some factors may seem beyond control, leaders can still exert influence. The verse suggests that leaders should understand the power of influence and persuasion in shaping outcomes. Thus, inaction is not an option for leaders.
Also, as a leader, you must lead by example. Your actions or inaction may be reflected in your team. So despite the fact that you do not have authority over the outcome, you must continue to take action on the factors which are within your authority and control.
SUMMARY
In conclusion, Chapter 2, verse 47 of the Bhagavad Gita illuminates the path to effective leadership by emphasizing the principles of authority and detachment, fostering team empowerment, and acknowledging the influential power inherent in leadership roles. By embracing the essence of Karma Yoga, leaders not only navigate the complexities of project management successfully but also discover a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment in their journey.
This glimpse into the boundless wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita regarding leadership and personal development signifies more than a set of principles—it is a transformative guide. As leaders internalize these teachings, they not only steer projects towards success but also embody the authentic spirit of yogic leadership, creating a lasting impact on both their teams and themselves.
