Empowering Latino Youth Through Financial Education: Insights from Imelda Manzo
Hispanic Wealth Project
Empowering Latinos to prosper through education, small business development, and sustainable homeownership.
The Hispanic Wealth Project (HWP) is making waves in financial education, and one of our champions leading the charge is Imelda Manzo . As a 2024 NAHREP Director & HWP Ambassador, Imelda is passionate about empowering Latino youth with crucial financial knowledge.
Imelda recently shared her experiences spearheading a groundbreaking financial education initiative at Palomar College in San Diego. This program, funded by a $100,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation, aims to educate Latino students on the importance of financial savviness.
Despite initial challenges, Imelda's persistence paid off. The program started with virtual "skill shops" and has now become a regular part of the college's curriculum, with plans for in-person sessions and participation in career fairs. The response from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Imelda noted:
"We were so surprised to see the engagement... They were chatting away, asking questions. 'Hey, tell me more about this. Oh, I didn't know about that.'"
Students are not only learning but also actively applying this knowledge to their lives. The program covers crucial topics like credit management, savings, and investment strategies.
Imelda's vision extends beyond Palomar College. She's exploring partnerships with organizations like Empower Latino Futures (ELF) to expand the reach of financial education in the Latino community.
Key Takeaways for Latino Youth:
Imelda's work embodies the HWP's mission to educate and financially empower the Hispanic community nationwide. By reaching young Latinos early with these vital financial skills, we're paving the way for a more prosperous future for our community.
