Empowering independence: The life changing impact of adapted housing

Today, I’d like to share a story that’s particularly close to my heart, one that demonstrates the positive impact of tailored housing solutions on the lives of our customers and showcases Bromford’s commitment to creating communities where everyone can thrive.?

Recently, I had the privilege of working with Latoya Burke and her daughter JoJo, a vibrant young girl with unique mobility needs. The challenges they faced in their previous home were significant, with JoJo struggling to navigate the space, which not only restricted her independence but also placed additional stress on the entire family.?

When Swindon Borough Council nominated Latoya and JoJo for a specially adapted home, Bromford saw an opportunity to make a real difference. By working closely with local authorities and leveraging our expertise in creating adapted housing, we were able to deliver a wheelchair-adapted home, tailored specifically to JoJo’s needs.?

This new home was designed with features that allow JoJo to move freely and safely throughout the space. The home includes ramps, widened doorways, a wheelchair lift, and accessible light switches, along with specially designed bathrooms and a kitchen. These adaptations have empowered JoJo to perform daily tasks with greater ease and independence, which is exactly what we aimed to achieve.?

The transformation in Latoya and JoJo’s lives has been incredibly rewarding to witness. It’s stories like these that remind me why I’m passionate about working at Bromford. We’re not just providing houses; we’re creating homes that enable people to live their best lives.?

Latoya described the new home as “life-changing,” saying: "The support from Bromford has given us a home where JoJo can be independent, and we can all live more comfortably and happily. Moving into our new home was such an emotional experience. The adapted features make everyday tasks so much easier for JoJo and have reduced our stress significantly. I wish more housing associations provided adapted homes for families in our situation, as it makes such a huge difference in our quality of life.”?

For me, this experience reinforces the importance of the work we do at Bromford – collaborating with local authorities and partners to make a tangible, positive impact on the lives of our customers.?
