Empowering the Future: Reflections on a Transformative Teenage Mentorship Program in Mukuru

In the vibrant communities of Mukuru, we recently concluded a powerful mentorship program for girls and boys, an initiative that brought together passion, purpose, and collaboration. Held in partnership with Al Kheyraat-Mukuru Lunga Lunga, Masjid Al Aqsa-Mukuru Mareba, Masjid Al Ameen-Mukuru Ruben, and Youth of Hope-Mukuru Kwa Jenga, the program united mentors, community leaders, and teenagers for an unforgettable experience.

A Safe Space for Learning and Growth

The girls’ mentorship, led by Khalil Kafe and Abu Najma, created a nurturing environment where young girls could openly discuss their dreams, challenges, and aspirations. Beyond mentorship, the program included a meaningful sanitary pad drive in partnership with Happy Girls, ensuring that no girl feels held back due to lack of basic necessities.

Meanwhile, the boys' mentorship, guided by Hamza Hassan, Sheikh Ali Shekuwe, and imams from local mosques, offered young boys an opportunity to learn values like leadership, discipline, and resilience. It was a space for self-discovery, shaped by the wisdom and guidance of experienced mentors.

Why Continuous Mentorship Matters

Vulnerable communities like Mukuru face unique challenges—poverty, peer pressure, and limited access to opportunities. For teenagers, these pressures can become overwhelming, often pushing them toward negative influences.

Mentorship programs offer more than guidance; they provide:
