Every year on June 27th, the global community celebrates World Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) Day, highlighting the crucial role these enterprises play in driving economic growth, innovation, and job creation.
MSMEs are significant contributors to most economies, particularly in developing countries. They account for the majority of businesses worldwide and are essential for job creation and global economic development. Representing about 90% of businesses and more than 70% of These numbers are significantly higher when informal SMEs are included. According to World Bank estimates, 600 million jobs will be needed by 2030 to absorb the growing global workforce, and employment worldwide, formal SMEs contribute up to 50% of national income (GDP) worldwide. making SME development a high priority for many governments. However, access to finance is a key constraint to SME growth and is the second most cited obstacle they face in emerging markets and developing countries.
In Ethiopia, MSMEs are a cornerstone of the economy and society. They represent a significant portion of the private sector and are vital in fostering inclusive economic growth. According to one study, MSMEs account for approximately 90% of all enterprises and contribute about 70% of industrial employment. These enterprises operate in various sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, trade, and services.
MSMEs in Ethiopia are essential for job creation, contributing over 70% of employment opportunities in the country.
