Empowering Entrepreneurs, Transforming Communities

Khayelitsha, South Africa – In a country grappling with one of the highest unemployment rates globally, with underprivileged communities often lacking access to technology, the Silulo Foundation is pioneering a solution that promises to develop skilled entrepreneurs in disadvantaged areas. By partnering with government bodies, tertiary institutions, and the private sector, the Foundation is bridging the gap, empowering entrepreneurs, and making technology knowledge and skills accessible to those who need them most.

Addressing South Africa's Unemployment Crisis

South Africa's unemployment rate is among the highest in the world, with the latest figures indicating that around 34.9% of the population is unemployed. Khayelitsha, one of the largest townships in Cape Town, has a population of approximately 2.4 million, many of whom face economic hardships and limited access to essential services, including technology.

A Visionary Leader

Luvuyo Rani, a social and serial entrepreneur, founded the Silulo Foundation in 2022. Collaborating with the University of Notre Dame and the University of the Western Cape through the Urban Poverty Initiative (UPI), Rani’s vision is clear: empowering entrepreneurs for a brighter future. "In Africa, we need more social entrepreneurship. It is us who understand what is happening in our community; it is only us who can bring the right solutions," says Rani. His vision and dedication have driven the Foundation's success and its positive impact on countless lives.

The Entrepreneurship Programme

The Silulo Foundation's Entrepreneurship Programme is a pioneering 10-month initiative designed to support both aspiring and established small business owners, primarily operating in the townships and rural areas of the Western Cape. By providing entrepreneurs with comprehensive training, mentoring, and access to essential resources, the programme equips them with the tools needed to turn their ventures into sustainable and successful entities.

This initiative not only creates job opportunities but also significantly contributes to the larger South African economy. The Foundation’s strategic partnerships with academic institutions, government entities, and private sector organisations have been pivotal in transforming the township economy and fostering a generation of informed and capable business leaders.
