Empowering employees in remission: How businesses can support cancer survivors

National Cancer Survivors’ Day is an annual observance held on the first Sunday in June, which aims to celebrate and honour individuals who have survived cancer. It serves as a day of hope and recognition for those who have battled cancer and emerged as survivors. The day not only acknowledges their courage and resilience, but also raises awareness about the challenges they face during and after their cancer journey.?

Some of the challenges that employees who are in remission might face

Everyone’s healing journey looks and feels different – but there are certain physical and emotional factors that you can remain mindful of.

  1. The physical effects of cancer and its treatment

Cancer and its treatment can have profound physical effects on individuals. Physically, cancer and its treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery, can lead to various side effects. Fatigue, pain, nausea, hair loss, changes in appetite, and weakened immune function are common physical challenges faced by cancer patients and survivors. These effects can significantly impact an individual’s ability to perform daily tasks and maintain productivity in the workplace.?

2. The psychological impact of living with a cancer diagnosis

Beyond the physical impact of the disease, there’s also an emotional toll that is coupled with it. A cancer diagnosis and treatment can cause anxiety, depression, fear, and emotional distress. Coping with the uncertainties of the disease, managing the impact on personal relationships, and adjusting to a new sense of self can be overwhelming for individuals. It’s crucial for businesses to recognise and address these physical and emotional challenges to provide appropriate support for their employees who are cancer survivors.

The importance of creating a supportive work environment for survivors

Businesses play a vital role in promoting employee well-being and creating a culture of compassion and understanding. By prioritising employee well-being, businesses demonstrate a commitment to the holistic health of their workforce. Accommodating survivors’ needs and offering appropriate resources in the workplace are beneficial to employees and the business.?

  1. Be a little more flexible

Firstly, it helps cancer survivors maintain a better work-life balance, which is crucial for their overall health and quality of life. Flexibility in scheduling or the option to work remotely can assist survivors in managing medical appointments and balancing their recovery needs with work responsibilities.

2. Create room for emotional support

Providing resources such as counselling services, support groups, or educational materials on cancer survivorship empowers individuals to navigate their post-treatment journey effectively. This support not only enhances their well-being but also equips them with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in the workplace. By accommodating their needs and offering resources, businesses foster a positive work environment where cancer survivors feel valued, supported, and empowered to contribute their skills and expertise.

So important! I've seen the impact a supportive work environment can have in this space and it really is a 'make or break' for people currently going through treatment and then in recovery/remission. I don't think we speak enough about this.
