A CASE IN POINT
In February 2023, Wind Academy partnered with a dynamic Independent Power Producer (IPP) to bring Wind Academy’s E-learning Initiative to the disadvantaged communities surrounding one of the IPP’s wind farms, aiming to enhance education and bridge the digital divide. The Initiative is being run over a period of 2 years, with further expansion on the cards.
The Initiative has been a game-changer in transforming education and has significantly improved educational outcomes in participating schools. Initial assessments show literacy and numeracy improvements of 7-14% among learners, along with enhanced engagement and morale. Teachers report increased job satisfaction and greater confidence in using technology, contributing to a more dynamic learning environment. The Initiative has also sparked broader community interest in digital learning and sustainability, laying the foundation for long-term educational and socio-economic upliftment.
Setting a new gold standard for educational initiatives in underserved communities, the Initiative has not only improved literacy and numeracy, but also fostered digital literacy and environmental awareness. As a model of success, the Initiative demonstrates how impactful partnerships between renewable energy role-players—and particularly IPPs—and educational organisations can create lasting, positive change, empowering both learners and educators in rural areas.
MEASURING THE IMPACT
Initial Impact Data: Early results from the Wind Academy E-learning Initiative have shown significant improvement in literacy and numeracy. Across participating schools the learners' numeracy skills improved by an average of 7% to 12%, while literacy scores saw a 12% to 14% improvement after just six months of participating in the Initiative, which currently impacts 749 learners and 30 teachers.
Broader Impact: The Initiative is not just transforming academic performance but is also empowering communities by promoting digital literacy and equipping learners with future-focused skills. Teachers have reported increased learner engagement and morale, with the programmes fostering a growing interest in technology and sustainable practices within the community.
THE ROLE OF EDUCATION IN SUSTAINABILITY
Young Green Ambassador Programme (YGAP): Teaching sustainability from an early age is crucial in shaping a generation of eco-conscious leaders. The YGAP integrates sustainability education into the curriculum, helping learners understand renewable energy, conservation, and the importance of protecting the environment. By equipping learners with this knowledge early on, the Initiative empowers them to become active participants in building a sustainable future. The goal is to instil a deep awareness of environmental responsibility and to nurture skills that can positively impact their communities.
Sustainability Projects: YGAP emphasises hands-on learning through practical sustainability projects such as recycling initiatives and gardening. These activities make sustainability concepts tangible and relevant for learners, allowing them to directly apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world scenarios. By engaging in these projects, learners not only develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills but also gain a sense of ownership over their contributions to a more sustainable world.
LOOKING AHEAD

Wind Academy’s E-learning Initiative is poised for expansion, with plans to extend the Initiative to more schools and additional grades in areas where wind farms are located. New curricula such as Coding & Robotics will be introduced to equip learners with critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing them for the future. Another new initiative, the Veggie4school Gardens, will also be integral to this growth, fostering sustainability through hands-on activities like vegetable gardening and waste management. These activities not only create greener schoolyards but also teach learners valuable lessons in teamwork, creativity, and environmental responsibility. As we look to the future, we aim to expand YGAP to more schools and integrate it across various grades, reaching even more learners with essential sustainability education. Our vision includes developing more hands-on projects and enhancing digital content to deepen learners' engagement with sustainability practices.
Long-Term Vision
A core component of Wind Academy’s long-term vision is the goal of achieving "one learner—one iPad", ensuring that every learner has individual access to digital learning tools. Hand-in-hand with this, our long-term vision is to expand the E-learning Initiative and create further meaningful and relevant content using cutting-edge technology—such as virtual reality—to facilitate South Africa’s youth in their education journey.
