?For those of us living beyond the London bubble, a standout aspect of the King’s Speech was its focus on “greater devolution”. The English Devolution bill proposes new powers for metro mayors and combined authorities, aiming to support local growth plans and benefit communities.?
?However, local authorities face a critical task: staying closely connected to the communities they serve. A well-crafted communication programme will be essential to ensure that this localised power and budget yield positive outcomes for communities in the north.?
?Here are five reasons why engaging with local communities matters for authorities and public services as they begin to allocate their devolution budgets:?
- Tailored solutions for local needs: effective communications with local communities will ensure that policies, services and infrastructure projects truly meet the specific local needs and solve the unique challenges they face.??
- Building trust and accountability:? trust in local authorities is low, especially in the north, and there’s a colossal job to be done to earn it back. People need to see that their voices matter, rebuilding trust will require transparent communication, prioritising residents' well-being and regular updates.??
- Harnessing local knowledge: nobody knows what would benefit the local area better than those that live and work there. Local authorities and transport providers should be finding ways to tap into this local knowledge to identify hidden issues, cultural nuances and innovative solutions.??
- Promoting social cohesion: engaged communities are more cohesive and resilient. Involving local residents will strengthen social bonds, reduce isolation and encourage collective action. The heart of the north is founded on community spirit and pride and there’s no stopping us when we’re working towards a shared purpose!??
- Mitigating disparities: speaking to communities to ensure benefits will be distributed equitably. Involving local people in decision-making also presents a fantastic opportunity for local authorities and public services to address inequalities, prioritise undermarginalised groups and create a fair distribution of resources??
Central to all of this is effective communication. Local authorities and metro mayors must recognise that this newfound power also brings significant responsibility – a duty to positively impact the communities they serve. One wrong move could have drastic consequences and a robust communications strategy will be essential for success.?
