Empowering Careers: Employee to Executive Franchisee

Empowering Careers: Employee to Executive Franchisee

Successful entrepreneurs in franchising open the doors to many options for empire-building and lifestyle choices.

Take, for example, the following hypothetical conversation:

Client - “I want to invest $150,000 in a franchise. I have been successful with my corporate career and have thought about starting my own company for a while. A friend told me franchising is a better investment than the stock market, and I’ve dreamed of owning a business that adds value for my community.”

Me - “What are your strengths?”

Client - “I excel as an engineer. I can bring a team together to accomplish a mission. I am organized and process-oriented, and I see challenges as opportunities to learn from and overcome.”

Me - “How much time do you see yourself working on your new business weekly?”

Client - “As much as it takes.”

Me - “What does your family think about starting your business?”

Client - “My husband has a great job and supports the decision. He wants to transition out of corporate life once we prove the franchise is successful.”

Me - “In the discovery and due diligence phase, you’ll need at least 2-3 hours weekly. Are you able to commit to that?”

Client - “Yes. Let’s get to work.”

The fictitious conversation is synthesized from actual conversations. It highlights a few thoughts going into the world of business ownership.

The following graphic illustrates the stages of growing your franchise empire:

The owner-operator described above is on one end of the spectrum. Their resources are on the lower end of the spectrum. They have a successful history of overcoming business challenges in the corporate world, and they are willing to invest their time and talents in themselves and organically grow their franchise.

The timing of the next step depends on 1) the new owner’s execution and 2) the franchise system. Moving to the semi-absentee stage usually means the franchisee’s business is profitable enough for them to hire a general manager to run its day-to-day operations.

This transition can occur in as little as 6-9 months for some franchise systems. For others, the transition takes 2-3 years to grow to the required revenue level.

A semi-absent owner may decide to continue working on various aspects of their business, such as marketing, sales, and accounting, or hire someone to perform these functions.

This stage opens the door for the franchisee to explore adding additional units or, in my case, pursue another passion (firefighting) that benefits their community. In other situations, the owner can diversify their revenue streams and become a franchise broker, selling franchise units to new franchisees.

The choice is yours—that’s the point! You grow your business and have options that match your life’s vision. You are in complete control. You are not bound by the corporate ladder and subject to the whims of the new boss, CEO, or stock market.

The executive franchise owner is an empire builder. They have multiple units within the same brand or diversify with units in various brands. Their business has a defined corporate structure, and their function sets the overall strategy for their business that owns franchises.

Not that different from the questions I ask potential coaching clients in the first conversation. I do add, "Do you have some kind of passion project you're insanely excited about?" and, "What's the dark side of those business strengths?"
