Empowering Agricultural Leadership: Yakubu Abukari’s Story of Impact in Ghana

Yakubu Abukari , the Director of Agriculture at the Kpandai District Assembly, is making waves. With over a decade of experience and an unwavering passion for improving food systems, Yakubu has taken on the challenge of transforming agriculture within the Northern Region of Ghana. But what sets him apart is his unique leadership approach—one that fosters collaboration, innovation, and sustainable development.

A Vision Rooted in Collaboration

As Director of Agriculture, Yakubu plays a pivotal role in managing the resources and programs that shape agricultural policy and practice within the district. His work spans numerous national projects, including the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ 2.0) initiative, the Ghana Agricultural Sector Investment Programme (GASIP), and the Emergency Support to Rural Livelihood and Food Systems Exposed to COVID-19 (ESRF) project. Each of these programs is designed to uplift Ghana’s smallholder farmers, ensuring they have the tools and knowledge to succeed in an ever-evolving agricultural landscape.

But Yakubu’s leadership style didn’t emerge overnight. It was the result of ongoing development, which reached new heights through his participation in CALA’s Leadership Program. As a Food System Leader, Yakubu’s approach to leading his team and implementing agricultural projects has been deeply influenced by the skills and insights he gained from the program.

How CALA Shaped Yakubu’s Leadership

Reflecting on his time at CALA, Yakubu credits the program for helping him refine his leadership skills—particularly in areas like goal setting, communication, team building, mentoring, and collaboration. These skills have not only enhanced his personal growth but have transformed the way his team operates.

My leadership approach is now open and collaborative. I’ve introduced an open-door policy where my staff participate freely in decision-making, resource allocation, and project planning. This was not the norm before, but now, we work as a team, and my staff appreciate this transparency,” Yakubu shares.

His leadership has had a noticeable impact on staff morale. Yakubu recalls a moment when rumors spread that he might be transferred, and his staff rallied to prevent it, going so far as to plan a petition to keep him as their director. “That moment showed me how much my leadership style had built trust and collaboration within my team,” Yakubu reflects.

Fostering Systemic Change Through Leadership

Before Yakubu took on his leadership role, teamwork and collaboration were rare within the Department of Agriculture. Staff morale was low, and many were considering transfers to other districts. However, Yakubu’s leadership has reversed this trend. By creating a supportive and inclusive work environment, his team now actively contributes to the success of agricultural initiatives that positively impact the local food system.

The CALA program taught me how to mentor, delegate, and build a strong team. These principles were essential in keeping staff motivated and retaining skilled personnel, which has had a ripple effect on our work with smallholder farmers,” Yakubu notes.

With an engaged team, Yakubu’s department has been able to effectively implement Good Agronomic Practices (GAP) and other technologies that promote environmental sustainability and improve productivity. These interventions have directly benefited smallholder farmers, enhancing food security and livelihoods in the Kpandai District.

Transforming Agricultural Practices and Policies

Yakubu’s influence extends beyond his department to broader agricultural policies and practices within the region. His ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders has resulted in special invitations to participate in policy discussions and reviews. Notably, he was invited to contribute to the development of a manual that outlines the coordinated efforts of governmental and non-governmental organizations in agricultural development.

His input is now sought after at both the regional and district levels, where he advises on agricultural strategies that align with national goals while ensuring local relevance. “CALA strengthened my communication skills, allowing me to clearly present ideas and gain buy-in from stakeholders. This has been instrumental in shaping policies that have a direct impact on farmers,” Yakubu explains.

Ripple Effects: Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

Yakubu’s commitment to mentoring doesn’t stop with his team. His dedication to fostering growth and development among young professionals has inspired others to follow in his footsteps. One of his staff members was accepted into the 2nd cohort of CALA and is now pursuing a master’s program at the University of Queensland through an Australian Government scholarship.

I’ve always believed in leading by example. Seeing others follow the path I’ve taken in CALA and beyond is deeply rewarding. It shows the power of mentorship and how leadership can create lasting change,” Yakubu says.

A Legacy of Leadership

Yakubu’s journey as a CALA Food System Leader is one of perseverance, growth, and impact. His work in Ghana’s agricultural sector is not only transforming the local food system but also inspiring others to think bigger and lead with purpose. Through collaboration, transparency, and mentorship, Yakubu has created an environment where agricultural innovation thrives, and communities benefit.

As we continue to face the global challenges of food security and climate resilience, leaders like Yakubu Abukari remind us that systemic change starts with empowered individuals working together for the greater good.
