Empower Your Financial Success: Transform Your Money Mindset for Financial Literacy Month

Welcome to Herfinance Club with Sue Diamond, a weekly newsletter focusing on a holistic approach to financial Success.?Our mission is simple: we want to inspire ONE million women to talk about money because knowledge is power, and when that knowledge helps you become more independent, it translates to empowerment.

As we welcome Financial Literacy Month in April, I'm invariably asked, "What exactly constitutes financial literacy?"

According to Investopedia, financial literacy is the ability to understand and effectively use various financial skills, including personal financial management, budgeting, and investing. Essentially, it is the cornerstone of our relationship with money and a learning journey that lasts a lifetime.

If you aim to foster a healthier relationship with money, you're in luck.

Today's technological advancements offer a multitude of resources, from apps that help monitor your spending and saving habits such as YNAB, to numerous free online resources that teach you about budgeting and financial literacy. All are at your disposal to help get a handle on your finance management.

But the most transformative tool for spurring financial improvement isn't found in an app store. It lies within you.

Altering your perception about money, or what's referred to as your 'money mindset,' can cause a profound shift in attitude that leads to genuine success.

The journey to boosting your financial literacy starts with nurturing the perfect money mindset. In my book, The Money Belief Formula: Mindset + Behavior = Financial Success..., I take you behind the scenes of how shifting your mindset can result in a more abundant life.

What do we mean when we say 'money mindset'?

It's our individual perspective and attitude toward finances, shaped by various factors like childhood experiences, decisions we've made, and life experiences.

To gauge your money mindset, ask, "What feelings does money evoke in me?" Recognizing your emotional response to money can help pinpoint patterns or mental blocks that might be hindering your progression toward financial goals.

Having a positive money mindset is integral to making wise financial decisions. It reframes how we perceive money. We start seeing it as a tool for generating wealth to achieve our long-term ambitions, not just an end to itself.

So, what is the ideal money mindset?

It starts with understanding the value of money and seeing its role as a tool to reach goals, rather than a source of anxiety or stress. Cultivating this mindset is a continuous process that demands mindfulness around your thoughts and actions towards money, fostering a sense of peace and understanding about it. With time, you can start developing positive habits that steer you closer to financial freedom.

This change begins with acceptance, acknowledging your present state as the starting point, and using it as an opportunity to identify areas needing improvement.

Two key questions -

  1. 'How is my current thinking stopping or hindering me from achieving my goal?'
  2. 'What is one step I can take today to move closer to that goal?' -

By continuously asking yourself these two crucial questions fosters a forward-thinking perspective, laying a solid foundation for success in your financial journey.

Getting caught up in the practical aspects of money management can often lead us to neglect the importance of mindset. Although it might not appear as engaging at first, maintaining a positive attitude towards finances is essential. This is especially true considering the reasons behind perpetual debt, the fear of investing, or the reluctance to monitor spending habits.

Your thoughts about money matter. If they are negative, improving your financial situation becomes a difficult task. Negative perceptions make it hard to make sound money decisions.

How can you cultivate a healthier money mindset?

Mindfulness is the key. By deliberately choosing where to focus your attention, you can make conscious decisions about spending, saving, and prioritizing your goals, and how you perceive your financial status.

For example, it's easy to become discouraged and believe that getting out of debt is impossible, but with a healthy money mindset, you can be proud of taking small steps towards this goal like putting $20, $50, or $100 towards your debt each week.

Assessing your current relationship with money is important before proceeding with other strategies or tips. If you have a history of negative money experiences, breaking that cycle and taking steps toward your goals can feel difficult. Cultivating a positive money mindset, therefore, becomes an essential ingredient for lasting success.

Maintaining a journal is a fantastic tool to keep your aspirations in the foreground. Countless studies have shown that keeping a journal can boost your sense of well-being, your ability to reach your goals, and even your physical and mental health. It is a great way to learn more about yourself and open up your mind to new ideas.

In my opinion, journaling about your money mindset, like working out or getting a massage, is one of the best acts of self-care.

Creating a clear vision for your life is critical. Think of this vision as your GPS for the future, guiding you on the steps to take and resource allocation.

Here’s how.

Vision boards are a great way to make your dreams become a reality, and having a visual representation of what matters most to you and what you're saving for will help inspire you, help you plan, and keep your goals on top of your mind. ?

  • Begin by envisioning the life of your dreams.
  • Where is your dream home?
  • What occupation are you aiming to pursue?
  • What are your desired income and financial goals?
  • What do you like to do when you have free time?
  • What brings you true satisfaction and a sense of purpose in life?

Visualize what you desire to manifest to determine how best to make it a reality.

This vision then becomes the driving force for everything that follows - your mindset, goals, how you save and spend money, and more.

I agree, financial literacy is not a destination, but a lifetime journey. There are many ongoing life situations that impact our finances and the decisions we must make.
