Empower your employees for career growth and retention

I am thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of my second book, "Confident Career Conversations"! I have used the analogy before, but I think writing a book feels a bit like giving birth (metaphorically, of course). After the first experience, you may think, "Wonderful! But never again!" However, after a few years, the difficulties and distress fade away, and you start thinking, "Wouldn't it be nice if...?"

That has been my journey with writing my books at least. It has been six years since my first book, "Grow Your Geeks", was published and reached the top of the Business Management and Leadership charts. At that time, I never imagined writing another book. But now, we are only weeks away from the release of my second book!

Even though it's my second book, I didn't expect it to be as significant as the first. However, when I received the first physical copy earlier this week and held it in my hands, emotions overwhelmed me as I read the dedication page honoring my late parents.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my publisher, Rethink Press , for helping me turn this dream into reality. Special thanks to Lucy McCarraher , Joe Gregory , Gillian Eve Makepeace , Anke Ueberberg , Sarah Marchant , Kinga Stabryla , and Jennifer Scott.

I am also immensely grateful to Prof. David Clutterbuck for writing the foreword for this book.

We'll be launching the book on the 15th of June, with a special introductory offer, so sign up and stay tuned for the launch details! You can learn more about the book and be the first to know when it's available here.

Plus we're having a launch party in Milton Keynes Thursday 13th July ??. If you'd be interested in attending in person, please email [email protected] to register your interest.

So that's my big news for this month! I have also just recently finished a series on setting yourself up for success in a new role. You can read more below, and I hope you enjoy this month's edition of Enjoyability and Employability newsletter.

Drop me a DM or comment below on what stands out or resonates with you.

All the best,

Antoinette

Setting Yourself Up for Success: Preparing for a New Role with Confidence

One of the?Career Labs?we offer is about ‘How to Succeed in the First 90 Days of a New Role’. That’s the subject of our next few posts.

Starting a new role can be a daunting experience. There is so much to take in and figure out, it may feel like you’re not sure where to begin. If this is you, don’t panic. In this post, we walk you through what you want to focus on as you enter your new role.

Preparing for the First 90 Days

The first three months of any new job is a time of high risk for both you and the organisation. Your employer is going to look for confirmation that you are a good fit for the position and for the organisation. After all, the decision to hire a new employee is based on relatively limited information: how you performed in the interview. Also in some cases, what your references said about you. Your employer is going to be watching to ensure that you can walk the walk, not just talk the talk. READ MORE

Navigating the First 90 Days in a New Role: Tips for Professional Success

There are a lot of things to think about as you begin a new role. How do you keep track of everything? Do you know what is expected of you? What do your direct reports do? And then there’s the external stuff, like meeting with the broader team, getting oriented in the company, etc.

In his book, 'The First 90 Days', Michael Watkins outlines eight professional success strategies. In this article, we look at each one. READ MORE

How to Adopt a Growth Mindset to Support Your Career Development

In recent years, the concept of a growth mindset has become increasingly popular. In fact, it was the subject of our most recent?Career Lab?for our client, UNDP. So, I thought I’d take the opportunity to write about it, too. In this blog post, we will explore what a growth mindset is, why having a growth mindset is essential for career development and how to develop a growth mindset.

This mindset is a belief that one’s abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. The opposite of a growth mindset is a fixed mindset. This refers to a belief that intelligence and abilities are innate and cannot be changed. In this blog post, we will explore why having a growth mindset is essential for career development. Career Development in Organisations: What part does it play in increasing employee engagement and retention?

Thursday 22nd June 2023 16:00 UK

In a time when the job market is uncertain many companies and business leaders may feel that career development is not a priority. They may see it as something that is personal to employees. But the challenge is, that while organisations want to maximise employees performance, employees want to maximise their careers. And these goals are not always one and the same. Career development provides the opportunity to align employee aspirations with business needs. That increases the chance that the workforce will be willing, ready and able to move into the roles that the organisation needs them to play.

Career development is going to become a proven competitive advantage for organisations. Is your organisation geared up to support growth and development?

Its on my list for when life calms down. I'm absolutely terrified of being a "bad" employer- I want anyone that helps grow my business to walk away with a positive experience and more skills!

Fantastic Antoinette Oglethorpe I read your first book with Jules White book club. I have been talking a lot with local businesses about the fear of training up staff so they will be more skilled and feel empowered to leave. I would love to know your thoughts on this.

Having those powerful career coaching conversations, not the scheduled management ones, can make such a difference in people's lives: colleagues, peers and those in our charge. I've learned a lot from your material Antoinette and use some of those techniques in my coaching conversations. Thank you! I am sure that the birth of your second book will enhance the careers and lives of many. Well done ????.
